Kinja'd!!!

When there’s a language selection, and English uses an American flag. Or when Spanish uses a Mexican flag. Or when Portuguese uses a Brazilian flag. Might as well use a Singaporean flag to represent Chinese, or a Congolese flag to represent French.

IT’S TIME TO STOP

American English is different to UK English and Steam uses American English.

a Congolese flag to represent French.

That would be fun!

They could use an Austrian flag for German (yes, that’s where I’m from). There are even German speaking communities in Italy, Switzerland, Belgium and France as well as in the Czech Republic (probably the Netherlands and Denmark as well, but I’m not sure). You’ll find them even in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and in Kyrgyzstan.

I’ll have you know that Guernsey is actually the most powerful English-speaking nation and the only one that ACTUALLY matters.

A Namibian flag would also work for German, considering German is one of the most spoken languages there behind English and Afrikaans. Even a Brazilian flag would work due to the small German-speaking communities in Southern Brazil.

German’s spoken in a lot of weird places.

I don’t think it’s the case with this site or program but sometimes they have multiple versions of a language. For example English from Britain with the British flag and English from America with the U.S. Flag and English from Canada with the Canadian flag because they are all slightly different versions of English. In that specific case I think it makes sense.

Nationality and language aren’t the same thing though.

In that victory screech video, they used an American flag because that’s an American show. Doesn’t make sense to use an English flag. If it were spongebob voiced and produced in England, then they could use a UK flag.

No one told them to colonize us. Also, Brazilian Portuguese is quite different than the proper Portuguese, which matters when we are around 80% of all Portuguese speakers worldwide

It infuriates me when you turn on a computer for the first time it says to select language, like ‘English U.S.’, ‘English U.K.’, etc... I select English U.K. Yet the favourites is still spelt Favorites.

One country, two languages! (Actually four)

Or even better if they had like a hundred languages to select and they all had the Indian flag!

If you go by population numbers, American and Mexican flags are more appropriate than British/English and Spanish flags, even if they’re the “source”. Plus, apparently American “English” is truer to old English then current UK English.

Afrikaans really is a different language than Dutch. Dutch is the origin, sure, but the two languages have evolved separately long enough to be able te speak of different languages. If a native Dutch speaker, especially one who does not speak English, hears someone speak Afrikaans or sees a written text in Afrikaans, he’ll miss 50+% of the meaning (maybe less for the written text). It’s like Spanish and French, two separate languages with the same origin.
