got caught speeding on my way into work this morning, 91 in a 55 which here in illinois is a misdemeanor. i wasnt doing anything nefarious, just not paying attention really. my only saving grace is that it would be my first speeding ticket in almost 8 years. Ive already contacted a lawyer about it but being a holiday weekend i likely wont hear back till tuesday or wednesday. this is gonna suck. luckily the cop didnt mark it as a speeding in a construction zone which is why the speed limit dropped to 55

Ouch. That sucks.
Good call on the lawyer. Gotta get that knocked down to a lower speed. Your record should make that reasonable.
Good luck.

The lawyer fees will probably be a few hundred, but they’ll probably get it knocked down to 10 over, maybe with a traffic school agreement or something. Good luck.

In my younger stupid days I got a 120 in a 70. I was able to get the felony speeding knocked down to a misdemeanor. That was my only ticket I’ve gotten in 22 years of driving.

did you use a lawyer or did you represent yourself?

I had. 26 over ticket once, quite a few years ago. I didn’t contact a lawyer (should have) but when I went to appear, the DA knocked it to a different non-moving violation that still had a higher fine amount. I think I paid a little north of $500, but very much worth it to not get 6 points on my license.

In Texas, if it’s been more than a year since your last ticket (I think. I forget how long the interval is), then you can plead guilty or no contest and ask to take a defensive driving course. If you don’t get another ticket in the next year, then the ticket is taken off your record. No lawyers needed.

illinois is like that but only if youre caught doing less than 25 over, anything more than that is a different ball game unfortunately

My only ticket was a 28 over back in 2010. Which was lucky in a way because at 30 it becomes “reckless” here. I just paid it ($320) and made sure I didn’t do it again.

What part of IL? If it’s Saint Louis area, I might have a recommendation.

I used a lawyer. I hired both a traffic lawyer and a criminal defense lawyer. They were able to negotiate a plea which included a $500 fine, defensive driving, 40 hours of community service, and had to carry an SR-22 for 3 years. It was worth every penny to keep a felony off my record. This was also 20 years ago. I don’t think anyone believed an early 90's Elantra would go that fast. I got hit, according to my radar detector, when my foot was off the accelerator so who knows how fast I was going a few seconds before that. I could have killed someone and I think I got off light.

Speeding ain’t worth it. To think of all the times I street raced and never got caught. Luckily I was never around any accidents during that time. Man I was stupid. That’s why I drive really slow cars now.
