Bad news and good news

Both exhaust patches were a total failure. Neither the soda can, nor the actual exhaust patch kit were any match for the pipe being completely cracked in half.

The good news, is it was super easy to take the exhaust off. I was afraid I’d have to tear the thing half apart. Nope, four easily assessable bolts and it fell right off.

My buddy is going to try and weld it back together for me. Otherwise I’ll have to bite the bullet and spend money on parts.

I’m glad you tried though. It gives you a good story to tell and boosts your shop teacher cred.

Oh definitely. I’m glad I tried both. I bet the actual patch would’ve worked, if it had just been a hole in the pipe. But with the pipe actually split in half, there was just too much movement and it tore. It was perfect for the first three blocks though. For $8, it was definitely worth a try.

That looks like a reasonably straight section where it broke. You might be able to find some steel plumbing pipe that fits close enough to use some aluminum cans as shims for a tight relatively leak free fit with clamps.

Although I bet if you scrounge ebay you’ll be able to find an exhaust for a reasonable price.

If my buddy can weld it back together, I’ll use this one again. Otherwise I have to decide if I want to buy another factory one, which I have found in my research will eventually crack just like this one did. Or take a chance on an aftermarket exhaust.

Yep. Hopefully this can be fixed for the cost of a case of beer.

Definitely. It only took like half an hour to do, and that was with taking pics. It worked well enough that I got to ride it a couple times.

Steve is coming over Sunday to help me work on it before the Watkins Glen race. You’re welcome to join us.

I have the sponsorship money, and the stickers are in the mail.

What time? Can I drink beer and offer unwanted (and totally unqualified) advice?

I’ll get back to you on the time. Beer and crazy advice, definitely yes.
