One engine that I have always liked and hated at the same time is the rotary (wankel). High revs, weird exhaust note... Nice power up high, zip down low. But that love hate relationship is one I have wanted to experience for a while. The owner of the 335is I reviewed had a friend that was interested in having me reviewing his car. And he had an RX8! I was chomping at the bit to review it, especially since it was a stock example.

The experience was great, and I get it now. What do you think of the RX8's or rotary engined cars in general?

I never owned a rotary myself... but I did drive a 1987 Mazda RX7 a family member used to own. They offered to sell it to me. But I was under 25 at the time and the insurance would have been insane.

I think rotary engined cars are neat. I know enough about them to understand that they can be reliable if you take preventative measures... starting with fuel... and sticking to 91 octane or higher. And being very vigilant with keeping the oil topped up and oil changes are a must.

And in the case of the RX8, doing some upgrades to the ignition and adding a SOHN adapter is highly advisable.

I would buy one if I could afford a 2nd car... OR if I didn’t need the cargo capacity my Focus Wagon offers... AND I was willing to spend 50% more on fuel every money and was willing to budget CAD$300/month on maintenance/repairs/upgrades.

I know enough about these cars to understand that they cost 50% to 100% more to own/operate compared to my Focus.

I think your comment sums it up perfectly. It is definitely not the car to take A to B to dealer for routine maintenance. You have to do more than that! I hope you will get to the point you can afford that second car! I am working on getting a classic myself. That will be a true project though when it happens, and will probably take years to complete.

I forgot to mention that I also test drove an RX8 when it was new and loved it.

But I never bought one for the reasons I mentioned and also I won’t buy any new cars as long as I have a mortgage.
