!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This just happened this week and the story gets crazier.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Yeah. Crazy stuff. Plus the guy with a gun wandering around down the street from me right now.

Good times. TLDW?

Guy gets chased by police, drives into semi and explodes, semi driver is taken to a burn ward and police come looking for his blood (seriously) and are lawfully turned away by a nurse who is violently arrested.

My sister is a nurse. I’d be extremely upset if this happened to her. Why was this cop so hard up to get a blood sample on the victim? My only guess is he was hoping to find anything so when his family sues the living bejeezus out them they can try to blame him.

That or he was just a crazy asshole.

We can’t figure out why he needed the victims blood so bad but I can tell you that no good things are coming for that cop. People in my office have been in crisis mode because that hospital has docs and nurses from our health system working there as well.

When asked what she thinks should happen to Payne, Wubbels was reserved in her comments, only stating, “I think he needs some serious training.”

This lady is far more generous that I would be. I hope this detective gets far more for disciplinary action because his behavior goes beyond a mere misunderstanding of department policy. He displayed a startling lack of judgement and basic personal respect. I hope the police department realizes that it does not need the damage to its relationship with the community that sweeping this under the rug would cause.

Wow crazy stuff there. Did the guy they were chasing intentionally drive into that trucker?

And screw that cop. I wouldn’t want to do their job but from what I’ve seen the best one’s descalate the situation not make it worse.

I want to say something but I’m dumbfounded. What the actual fuck was that police officer thinking? If I was the nurse I’d lawyer up and sue the shit out of the police department.

While I 100% agree, I admire her for not (at least right now) jumping on this as a means to win compensation. She deserves a some justice without question but Im still not convinced that monetary damages are the solution to problems like this.

Right you are. I wasn’t even thinking of monetary gain. I was thinking of making enough noise to leverage the police to actually do something about it. But yeah, I guess a civil suit would be her only means through the legal system to actually do that. Wouldn’t it be nice if the police suspended that detective, gave him a reprimand, and issued a formal apology to her?

According to an article I read somewhere else about this, there’s an old Utah law that requires blood samples be taken from a truck driver whenever a semi truck is involved in a fatal accident. BUT, the law was apparently taken off the books in the last decade, and the blood sample wouldn’t have been required for this accident anyways because of the obvious fault of the man fleeing police and the supporting video evidence of this for the police dash cams. So, either the detective doesn’t even know the laws in his own state, or he just didn’t care. Not good no matter which one it is.

Let’s hope that public outrage is a swift and destructive tool in this case. The cops need to shut that behaviour down.

The cop who arrested the nurse was thinking, “The semi driver or his next of kin might sue and the police department might be found at least partly liable for this crash, because it came about in the course of a high-speed chase. However, if we can shove off some of the blame on the semi driver, either because he had alcohol or drugs in his system or because our corrupt-as-fuck testing lab fakes the results so it looks like he had alcohol or drugs in his system, then we’ll come out ahead.”

This makes perfect sense if your model of police behavior is “Us vs. them, and fuck them.”

I also think we should factor in that the accident was the result of a police chase, and their liability is showing it’s ass. They would really like the guy to be high on something. His statements to the nurse imply that this situation requires going further than he ever has, why?

Kinja'd!!! "ttyymmnn" (ttyymmnn)
09/01/2017 at 17:16, STARS: 4

I’m pretty sure the only reason they wanted his blood is so they can deflect the blame for the high speed pursuit that led to the horrific accident. This was a classic case of contempt of cop, where the cop was convinced that nobody could stand in his way because he had a badge. Serious props to this nurse for standing up for her patient, and I hope that cop is unceremoniously fired for his unconstitutional actions.

The fact Officer Payne (the dipshit arresting officer) is also an ambulance driver. I don’t know about the U.S. but U.K. ambulance drivers are also trained ambulance officers and should know about protocols for drawing blood.

https://www.ksl.com/?sid=45629038&nid=148&title=stop-ive-done-nothing-wrong-nurse-shares-police-video-of-crazy-arrest-by-sl-officer

Porter said what is just as disturbing are comments caught on Payne’s body camera video while he was talking to another officer. Payne can be heard talking about his other job as an ambulance driver, and how Wubbels’ arrest might affect that.

“I’ll bring ‘em all the transients and take the good patients elsewhere,” he is heard saying about the hospital.

Seriously I know that each police force has bad apples but we seem to hear so many more from the U.S. than any other place for excessive force, needless shootings, fatal shooting for no reason what so ever, not knowing the law they are supposed to guard, etc... it’s like watching the wild west.

I hate to admit it, but this is exactly what I though: The police may be so eager to get the truck driver’s blood because they don’t want the reason for the crash to be “police chase”.

Kinja'd!!! "Svend" (svend)

The fact he’s also an ambulance driver and not knowing protocols for blood drawing and the law as both an ambulance driver and a police officer . I’d personally discharge him from office.

I don’t think retraining would do anything for this power craving idiot.

I hope he loses his ambulance driver job at the very least.

Nah, this is exactly what happens in a place with an ever more militarized and unaccountable praetorian sector. The most powerful union in the land is the collective police unions.

It happens in WA too, as in the case with the aggressive badge wearer vs speeding biker in Seattle.

I’m just going to say it straight, that man should not be a police officer. This wasn’t just a fault in the training, he used threats and physical force to try to intimidate a woman just doing her job into giving him what he wanted. She showed him, in writing, that it was LITERALLY ILLEGAL for her to give him the blood and he still tried to force her to do it. That’s not someone who can be trusted to uphold the law. I also suspect he targeted her specifically, as opposed to any of the male staff members in the room, because he perceived her as the weakest and easiest to intimidate. And then there’s that bit about bringing the hospital transients and basically make things as difficult as possible for them because they wouldn’t give him the blood, that to me shows that he’s angry, vindictive, and more than willing to hold (and act upon) a grudge. I wouldn’t trust this man with my safety. I wouldn’t trust this man with my rights. Hell, I wouldn’t trust this man not to eat my ice cream if I turn my back. He gots to go.

The theory i’ve seen is that the cops knew they fucked up by leading a dangerous police chase, then as soon as the perp hit and severely injured a civilian, they realized they fucked up more. So they were trying to find *something* in his blood to prove that it was the trucker’s fault and not the cops. Like if he had some prescription drugs or something in his system.
