Is This a Scam?

OK, I’ve received three emails in two days from a guy two states over inquiring about the old Lincoln I’ve got listed for sale. He urgently wants to buy it this week, sight unseen, apparently no interest in negotiating on price, and each message has a different email address (though the phone number stays the same).

I’m pretty sure none of this is legit.

Continental Club Coupe, because why not?

What do you suspect is the scam? Is he asking for some suspect way to pay?

Nice picture!

This feels scammy to me - particularly given the multiple email addresses. However, it might not be - if his method of payment is legit, and he’ll meet you in front of the police station, etc., I’d check it out-

Not yet, but the inexplicable urgency and nonspecific message are often clues that that’s where he might be headed.

Yeah, I’ll call from a pay phone for anonymity and at least see what’s up.

Excellent idea - and I wouldn’t even meet him by your own police station. Try a couple towns over. And the instant he starts talking about writing 3rd party post dated checks for twice the sell price, GTFO.

Don’t even bother to call back, definitely a scam. They pwn CL ads.

and part of me just thinks that maaayyyyybbbeeee your car is odd enough (early 80's Lincoln, right??) that he’s just eager and doesn’t want to lose it?

Sounds a bit sketchy to me. I have purchased out of town vehicles before and I always take care to try to convince the seller that no, I’m not a scammer, I’m just a weirdo who is willing to fly halfway across the country to buy your 20 year old SUV because rust leaves no survivors in Detroit.

You could tell him no thanks, but you could also tell him to arrange to show up on your doorstep with cash before you sell it to someone else and see what happens. You know, for curiosity.

The email thing is weird, but not a deal breaker. I had someone from Maine (I’m on Long Island, NY) put a $1500 down payment through paypal on my boat from a craigslist ad, sight unseen, then hook it up to a trailer two weeks later and drive away without so much as removing the shrinkwrap.

Yeah, just wait for the emails looking to get your contact info, but maybe not. If they are contacting you through the Craigslist relay emails, then the addresses could be different everytime. Yeah, meet by a police station and then for payment go to the bank with them to deposit the money right then. Good luck.

Yeah, except these aren’t exactly rare cars, I mean there’s two others in my town that I know of, and this isn’t a big town.

This is off of Hemmings, but, seems more like a CL style response.

Ah - you must live in a warmer climate than me, then. Anything over 20-25 years old is rare around me -all the more so if it’s not rusted out and wrecked.

Lower Delaware, we do use some road salt, but winters are fairly mild.

I think so, right? They usually have them in hotels.
