When you go to Five Guys on a shitty, cold, rainy day, after recently diagnosed with Celiac’s and they have When the Levee Breaks on the radio, followed by Talking Heads and Tom Petty.

Thanks Muzak deity. Maybe I won’t stab all my coworkers today after all.

Have you heard of Greta Van Fleet? They’re some kind of reincarnated Led Zeppelin

Sorry about the diagnosis. The good news is that gluten free options are becoming less terrible and more readily accessible.

Yeah. It’s been about a month. I am so. very. tired. of chicken and rice. My wife has been brilliant planning food and finding things I can eat. I have been overwhelmed at work closing out our summer sales event and eating has always been a struggle as I am picky already. Not much fun at all. However, it is really fairly easy now, for which I am thankful.

Not that it’s a huge, devastating condition, but I have been highly aware of how much I need to lean on the fact that I will survive this. And there are always far worse things.

on the plus side, its a pretty solid way to stay in shape. I have never met an overweight celiac.

They keep advertising a Greta Van Fleet concert on the radio. I haven’t given them a good listen yet, but anything comparable to Zeppelin is worth a try.

We haven’t met yet. I’m not obese, but I do need to lose at least 20 pounds. 40 would be better. I’m 6' and weight about 220. I’m also not in shape. Like at all. So that’s not 220 of muscle. Mostly jiggly, pasty, white-boy.

Having to stop drinking beer, while it sucks, I can tell I have already lost a pound or so.

I am very, very thankful wine is gluten-free. Not drinking would be horrid. Damn I sound like an alcoholic. I have a glass of wine like maybe twice a week after work. If I’m going crazy I’ll have two on Saturday evening.

I looke it up their allergy menu is a pleasant surprise. I have not had 5 guys in over 4 years when I had to go gluten free. I forget what it tastes like.

There are plenty of fatty, high calorie items that are gluten free, like many ice creams, Starbucks drinks that are really adult milkshakes, pulled pork, GF pancakes with butter and syrup. It’s not automatic weight control.

My wife did not enjoy the mess of eating 5 guys burger without the bun, so it is no longer on the list of options when I’m eating out with her wonderful, Celiac-having self.

Aside from eating a burger with a knife and fork (so fancy!), it’s still quite good.

I also have issues with dairy, which tends to go along with Celiac’s. So, apart from fries and potato chips, I am already cutting out quite a bit of the unhealthy stuff already.

Pulled pork and I are going to besties 4 evar.

What’s wrong with eating a burger with a knife and fork? It’s so fanceh! And you get to look superior to all the other slobs shoving food into their face-holes with their hands like filthy peasants.

But seriously. Eating with utensils there is really awkward. I don’t blame her at all. And a burger lettuce wrap?! Yeah...that’s asking for a mess.

Man I feel your pain.

Thankfully the choices and quality have come on leaps and bounds since I was a kid.

Fortunately I went into remission nearly 20 years ago now but I still know exactly what your going through.

Take care.

Fun fact: thyroid autoimmune disorders go hand and hand with Celiac’s, just so you know. Turns out that whatever the immune system targets when it goes after your thyroid is close enough to be triggered by gluten in many cases, and vise versa. I’m on the thyroid disorder side, but got a test for Celiac’s to make sure. Just FYI. Good luck!

Having to make this change at 35 feels an awful lot like I am always the ‘new kid’ at school. I have no idea how to order food anymore. I hold up the line trying to find the right combination of ingredients if there isn’t a set menu. And I make everyone have to change their gloves when I do finally figure out what I can order to eat.

Sigh...

Were you given a dietician to help you through the process?

There are many sites now, that we didn’t have when I was a kid, that can help you out with where to eat and what is safe to eat and how to navigate the land mines of food.

I would think there is an app out there that you can down load to tell you if it’s safe or not.

In the U.K. everywhere has to have allergy information available if they prepare food or sell ready made meals.

That’s so quaint with your comprehensive, intelligent, preventative approach to healthcare. I’m in the US. We can’t have nice things, apparently.

My wife has been brilliant on doing research and planning meals for us. We have to figure this all out ourselves. Insurance isn’t going to cover luxuries like a dietician who is professionally trained to make everything I need to change clear. That would hurt their profit too much to provide non-emergency life-saving care. After all, if the government won’t protect the hilariously insanely profitable insurance industry, then who will?

You and your wife may already be aware of these sites but go to some meetings, etc... take advantage of their collective knowledge to help ease the transition.
