Looks like I'll be getting used to construction noises in the morning

The two lots next door have been an overgrown field for the past year, filled with big beautiful trees, and the cats in the area, including ours, have loved poking around it in the grass twice their height. I guess the property owners are finally going ahead with their development that has been stagnant since tearing the old house down last year.

Kinja'd!!!

They’re building a 4-plex I believe, or maybe it’s 6 units, I can’t remember. They tore down all the trees a couple days ago, and then dug up the rest of it yesterday. This morning they’re grinding away the stumps, and starting to dig. They also tore the fence down, so between the loss of the trees and bushes, and that fence, our yard and side windows feel very exposed. It’s much brighter in here at night, and noisy as hell in the morning. Yay.

I always feel bad for trees when they get cut down.

It’s strange how when we go in prior to demolition, then lot is left, or it gets demolished, then sits for months.

Hopefully the new structure will actually be put to use rather than sitting vacant in speculation like to many others in the land of housing crisis.

I felt especially bad for these ones. I’ve grown up in this neighbourhood, and there was an old guy that had lived there, and spent mot of his time tending to the massive array of flowers, shrubs, lilacs, rhododendrons, and trees on the property. As his health got worse, it fell into disrepair, and after he died, his family put off deciding what to do with the property for about 10 years. Eventually they decided to tear the house down, and sell to a development company. I just find it depressing that he spent all those years making it a gorgeous area with all the plants and trees, and once he was gone his family just bulldozed it.

It is weird. I assumed they’d want to get started right away so they wouldn’t be splitting the build up into two seasons, but now they’ll definitely be doing that. I wonder if they had funding issues, because it sat doing nothing for nearly a year.

Since they’re making a multi-unit thing, I’m hopefully it will actually be used. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised if some more fuckery goes on.

That is depressing. I was really sad when my parents old maple tree got taken down. My dad just wanted the branch over their house cut off because the other maple had been struck by lightning and a large branch just missed the house. The tree climber told him his saw went into the trunk like butter and it was hollow and rotten so they had to take the whole thing down. When they did the trunk was completely solid all the way up the tree. It was just a soft maple.

Odds are better. It’s the highrise condos and detached residential houses that attract dirty money the most (then sit empty).

Definitely. Burnaby also fares a little better than Vancouver when it comes to empty units, but we still get the insane prices

It’s getting to be just as bad here. Maybe not as bad as Vancouver proper west side, but close. In my postal code, a detached house averages seven figures now. As the greenback weakens a little and this area continues to boom, it will only get closer.

Ouch. Yeah, here in Burnaby, the average detached home is somewhere between 1.5 and 2 million. Vancouver is just insane.

Average house 1.5MM. Average income is what, 80K? Yeah, nothing fishy there.

I find it amusing sometimes that Canada puts on some airs about being a land of justice and fairness, yet has a couple real estate markets tacitly known to be hotspots for money laundering.
