These came from a time when Rover essentially rebadged Honda’s. It was a little more than a rebadging, I suppose, but same underpinnings.

The Rover 400 Series was a solid car. Grand father had a 416 and the thing wouldn’t die. Later on in it’s life it had a battery fault (grand father bought a cheap battery so it wasn’t the car’s fault) but everything just kept going.
Nothing amazing about it, just a solid reliable car.
When I was younger I always fancied a 420GSi estate.

Based on the Honda Concerto. You could have it with the self destructing Rover K-series 1.4 litre, a 1.6 Honda engine (later replaced by a 1.6 K-series engine), a PSA diesel and a Rover 2.0 T-series (which was excellent BTW, but sadly replaced by the horrible 1.8 K-series).
And the wood veener is real!

Seen the small coupe once in Norway, but with British plates. It’s an interesting design, as I feel it’s quite wide compared to the length and the height.

It’s a beautiful elegant design that followed Rover’s design language.

This was the period when Rover and Honda were still doing things jointly as more or less equal partners, the 400/Concerto were developed simultaneously by engineering teams in the UK and Japan.
However, after that, BAe started cutting R&D spending and Rover stopped being able to contribute as much to the partnership, so the 2nd gen 400 and the 600 would up being almost straight rebadges of Hondas.
These were decent cars, and their solid reputation certainly tricked Rover (and, eventually) BMW management into believing that the brand could be aggressively pushed further upscale with higher prices on the 600 and next 400 and 200 models, which would up causing problems for them.

The K’s problem was the head gasket, Ford engineered a more durable version for the Freelander that solves the issue. SAIC is still but ilding them today for Roewe and MG, not bad engines otherwise.
