So I’ve got a job interview tomorrow, which is cool because I just found out the job existed this morning. They wanted me to come in today, but it was going to be at 5 and I had to pick up my son from daycare. The job itself is kinda neat though.
It’s spraying lawns for mosquitos and ticks. On its own that isn’t exciting, but it’s a seasonal job...8-9 months a year. During those 8-9 months it’s a lot of hours, but at the end you get laid off and either collect unemployment or get a seasonal gig until it starts back up. He said half he job is driving, which is cool because that means half the job I don’t consider work.
Is it a ton of money? No, not in the grand scheme of things. But it’s 50% more in 3/4 of a year than I make in a full year right now, so that’s a definite improvement. It’s enough to let my wife quit her job and go back to school, which is what she wants, which is therefore what I want.
I figure I can supplement that with a seasonal gig at UPS or FedEx, keep the money coming in. Or I’ll just take a few months off and be a fat sack of fat, whatever.
So hopefully it’s cool and hopefully I get it. I’d love to quit my job and start this one before I take the family to Seattle in late September, but we’ll see.

And soon, your son will be out of daycare. That’s like getting a raise.

Before my window washing business took off, I had almost no clients through the winter months so I took a couple weeks off to relax, then delivered pizzas for a few months. Driving the Miata with the top down, running to someone’s door and handing them food hardly felt like work, and the pay was surprisingly good. About $350 in tips per week working 5 nights (5 hour shifts) plus hourly wages. Here at least, every pizza delivery driver seems to be a total gearhead too!

Fact. Ours is one of the ‘cheaper’ ones around and its still like $1000 a month. I suppose when you think about it, he’s there 40 hours a week...so $6/hr is a relatively low price to pay for keeping my small human alive for me, but still.

I’ve got a WRX delivery guy and an S2000 delivery guy. I hadn’t thought about that at all, but the Miata is an excellent pizza delivery car with its mileage/get paid to drive it quotient. That’s not a bad idea.

I’m thinking of becoming a Jimmy John’s delivery driver to have a little money in my pocket during high school and college. Around where I live, they do it kind of on a do it when you want basis. Driving my golf around delivering sandwiches doesn’t sound bad.

Preach. We never had our kids in daycare full time, but even then, it was a chunk of change. And I had twins in daycare. We only put them in for 9 months, sort of like Pre-K to get them ready for kindergarten.

If you’ve got the time, go for it! I’ve heard that Jimmy John’s is pretty good as far as treating employees goes

As long as you can handle your local weather, it seems like a pretty good gig.
Save even more money by feeding your family nothing but free pizza! /s

I delivered pizza when I was in high school. I got to drive around with my radio blaring, so it was a great time for a teenager. But since I was working in a tiny town, the tips were awful. Most weeks I made more on my hourly wage than I did in tips. This was the norm for all the drivers. Sometimes small towns suck.

One of my professors once said “If an employer wants you to come for an interview at the same time you have to be at a funeral, see if you can get the funeral moved”. Real life doesn’t work like that, but I enjoyed the quote.

I usually agree with that. If they wanted me in any time other than 5 it would have been fine...I doubt anybody is going to argue with the ‘I have to pick up my toddler from day care’ defense, haha.
