Kinja'd!!!

I want a lens for my phone, but I want something that probably doesn’t exist. What I want is something that I can mount on the phone that lets me take pictures without looking like I’m taking pictures. It’s too bloody obvious when you’re using your phone as a camera. I’d like something that lets me take pictures whilst holding the phone at a normal viewing angle. Does such a thing even exist?

Somewhere around here I have an attachment for an SLR that lets you take pictures at odd angles, making it appear that you’re looking elsewhere:

I want something like this idea, scaled down for a phone, for use at normal phone viewing angles. Does it exist? Did I just create a new market? Is someone going to get rich off my brilliant idea?

No, nothing like that. I’m thinking of situations like at airports and the like where security is overly cautious. Security at work gave me a hard time last year when I was taking a few pictures inside of the building where I work. Most of the building is a bus maintenance facility, for chrissakes, not Fort Knox. I have an interest in photography and architecture and was just taking pictures of the building for my own studies, not like I was planning some sort of terrorist attack.

We’ve become too paranoid over the last 16 years, where everyone seems to assume the absolute worst when absolutely no ill intention is meant. I miss the good ‘ol days when people weren’t so ridiculously paranoid.

As someone who makes a hobby out of photographing airplanes at airports, I can tell you that there are guidelines about where you can shoot and where you can’t. Inside a private business, they can limit photography to their heart’s content, even if you don’t think it’s a security risk. You could get into a lot of trouble if you are caught surreptitiously taking photos, even if your intent is harmless. Best to ask first and be open about it.
