Literally the worst. And he’s got 750k subscribers that eat it up. But the worst thing is always that his videos all pop up first in the search terms, sometimes above chrisfix and ALWAYS above ericthecarguy

Scotty Kilmer is why I started questioning my dad’s ‘70s-era car advice.

Also, why would a casual thief bother with signal recording when a $10 hammer or coat hanger could do the same job of opening your car for less?

Kinja'd!!! "2Fast2Furious: Rotary Powered" (2fast2furiousfc3s)
08/30/2017 at 20:02, STARS: 0

I question why he think thieves will have hundreds of dollars in illegal frequency equipment just to steal some quarters and a 3$ charging cable

“BUT THE TECHNOLOGY CAN HACK IT, YOU DONT UNDERSTAND KEYS ARE PHYSICAL DIGITAL SIGNALS ARE NOT REAL THEY TURN THE FRIGGIN FROGS GAY”

Seriously gm used like 7 different cuts off keys in the 60s. You have a 1 in 7 chance of just running into a car with the same key.

08/30/2017 at 21:22, STARS: 0

So basically what he’s saying is that thieves can pick up on the lock signal your fob transmits, then rebroadcast that lock signal which will somehow  unlock the car?

Kinja'd!!! "2Fast2Furious: Rotary Powered" (2fast2furiousfc3s)
08/30/2017 at 21:33, STARS: 0

He’s also forgetting that the fob scramble the code so the code you get will still not even lock the car, and it certainly won’t unlock it

Kinja'd!!! "My bird IS the word" (mybirdistheword)
08/30/2017 at 21:53, STARS: 1

They didn’t bother with secure keys because you could break into the steering column with a screwdriver. They used that same steering column and keys from the 60s through the 80s.

As annoying as this guy may be, the technology he is talking about is real, if not commonly in use.

https://www.wired.com/2015/08/hackers-tiny-device-unlocks-cars-opens-garages/

For those who don’t want to read it, a hacker figured out a way to capture your code and use it, even if your remote is using rolling codes.

This is different from the better known relay systems which amplify the signal from your keyless entry system to gain access to your car while the keys are in the house. This new method records the codes as you lock and unlock your car.

By the way, the code is used for verification, not to give the lock or unlock command. It doesn’t matter if you sent the lock command, the rolling verification code can be used for either locking or unlocking.

While he might be right, his delivery still sucks.

The code is for verification and is separate from the lock/unlock command. It can be used for both locking and unlocking the car.

Seriously gm used like 7 different cuts off keys in the 60s. You have a 1 in 7 chance of just running into a car with the same key.

My dad has this great story about being out in the woods picking mushrooms with his father, when they got back to their GM pickup only to realize the keys got lost somewhere in the woods. But he had the keys to the (GM) car on a separate ring with him, and tried those— and they worked.

The story concluded with my great-grandmother cleaning the picked mushrooms later and finding the lost truck keys at the bottom of the basket.

I seriously love stories like this. It’s always funny because gm was probably one of the worst offender of using only a few cuts of keys for several years and several models
