Kinja'd!!!

Passed by this building today - up until recently, it had been an HVAC & plumbing supply warehouse, and I had no idea it was an old Lincoln-Mercury showroom (although there is a Ford dealer across the street). The property’s being renovated, and the corrugated metal siding was taken off to expose this 1950's paint scheme. These are terrible photos, since I had to take them with a cell phone while stopped at a red light.

I believe this would date to the brief period in the mid 1950s when Continental was its own brand for two model years, with Comet added in the late ‘50s/early ‘60s - after Edsel was discontinued, but before Comet was a full fledged Mercury model. It may actually be painted over an Edsel script.

I feel like hipsters ought to bring it back. They just need to call it “artisanal advertising”. Every business in Portland would want to get it done.

Comet was actually only sort of its own brand for 1960, I think. Which would... pin down the date pretty tightly. The first year. Also the last year for Continental as an independent brand, so 1960 without a doubt.

Probably would have been painted sometime in 1959, since the ‘60 models would have gone on sale that Fall.

Sure, and late enough in ‘59 or early ‘60 for them to have been informed Edsel was on the block - because Edsel *did* have ‘60 models! - but they were discontinued after going into production. I figured it would amuse you that it’s possible to pin down that exactly.

Yeah, Edsel didn’t have much of a 1960 run, I think they only built them for a few months, and most M-E-L dealers were refusing to stock them by then, anyway. Really, the dealers started dropping like flies almost from day 1. This place turns up on a list of Edsel dealers in 1957, so they had the brand even before the divisions merged.

Wonder when the whole thing got covered? It had to look pretty dated by about 1961, or so, but certainly wouldn’t have been worn out yet.
