You can never truly appreciate how great of an invention the hot water heater is until it fails on you.

Ugh. Hopefully it’s just a ‘doesn’t work’ failure, and not a ‘water every damn where’ failure.

Just a “doesn’t work” failure.

...that shower this morning was HARD

Ermagherd! That sucks.

Over the weekend I had a water softener fail internally and clog my entire house worth of plumbing with tiny resin microbeads. I spent all day Monday flushing the system, including the hot water heater.

Better than the tank rusting through at least.

Yeah I’ve been there, that is a harsh shower. On the bright side, I’m sure you were WIDE awake after that.

They’re not terrible to replace other than getting them down to the basement or wherever though.

I’ve owned two houses. I’ve had two furnaces and one water heater fail

One furnace went out spectacularly. The heat exchanger blew up - literally blew the fuck up - thankfully the explosion was contained; but that was definitely something I didn’t want to hear in the middle of November. Nor is it something I ever want to hear again

Hot water doesn’t need heating.

But I feel your pain. I found out mine was leaking when it dripped down and put out the burner. That was not a cheap repair.

We were without hot water for about a week while the landlord tried to find a replacement thermocouple for our water heater. Not a very old heater, but the part was already NLA. They wound up buying a new water heater because a $9 part failed on the old one......

I misread that as “falls on you” and was expecting Mythbusters-esque hijinks.

Pfft - hot water is for the weak. I’ve been without for well over a year now. There was a little disagreement between me and the gas company - they wanted money and I didn’t want to give them any (I was unemployed at the time and completely and totally broke).

They wanted my help to get into the basement, help I declined to give them. Perhaps when the car is paid off in October I might call them and try to work out our differences...
