You ever been through a storm that, when you look at the radar, is dark red? It’s just coming down so bad that it’s immediately creating large puddles on the side of the road at the curb? Imagine that for 18 hours per day for three days, with the other 6 hours as a normal steady rain.

Something that we Houstonians have learned is “If bugging out due to a hurricane sounds good to you, it probably sounds good to about three million other people.” That’s why we always fill our gas tanks when there’s a hurricane in the gulf, our pantries have non-perishable goods, and we know if our homes are prone to flooding.
At the same time, until my children are grown and out of the house, I will NOT be sticking around for direct hit hurricanes. The wind won’t blow you away, the rains won’t wash you away, but the lack of electricity during the summer will drive you insane.

Yup, Fort Bend county, off of 99. We stuck around mainly because my FIL is being a pig-headed prick and is refusing to evacuate from his retirement home in SL. We made it out without getting flooded, with electricity, internet, and food/water, so I guess it’s fine. BUT STILL...

I was telling my best friend (who lives down the street) earlier today that our home values will sky rocket by this time next year for that very reason.
With historic rains and flooding around the city, the water only came up to the top of the curb.

Its really scary for sure. My parents had to come stay with us as they were affected too. We drove by the neighborhood today. Water is still high, but not low enough to go back in. Thankfully it didn’t get as bad as predicted. It’s still surreal though.

In a city with a metropolitan population of 6.5 million the death toll has only been 30.
During rita it took some 24 hours to get out of the city. Many who were not ordered to evacuate did and created so much chaos many people abandoned their vehicles on the side of the highway. People dying on the highway nearly killed as many people as rita did.
Add in the fact that no model could predict the path of this hurricane, I think a good decision was made. I can imagine how may would have died on our now underwater freeways.
