I was really upset recently about having to replace my tires - they CAN’T be that old, they are only 4 years old and they still have a little life left and....wait...66,000 miles?! Thats how many miles are on them?! Yeah, okay its new tire time. Assuming Discount gives me a decent discount for labor daybor . Thinking about these in the 285/75r16

Same set I have on the GX, they seem nice and they have the mountain snowflake. but I don’t know how they’ll be in the long term. Anyone with miles on them?

Also what wheels you like better?

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

The tops ones are direct replacement with the right backspacing, offset etc. The others are direct fit minus 10 offset. Not sure how much that will matter but I think the lighter color would work better with the color of my truck.

Kinja'd!!!

16x8 6 on 5.5 4.5 inch backspacing with zero offset and a 106 hub opening if you can find something cooler.

I’ve seen the american racing wheels in person, but in chrome.

Do you think you’d get rubbing at full stuff with the -10mm offsets?

tis a question for the mudders, I can’t say.

My first choice would be to keep factory wheels, but there’s a few compelling aftermarket options now. I know there’s a number of MFGRs that make them with the correct offset for an 80. Any thoughts on those?

Not Cooper fan? The Discoverer AT3 would save you $2/tire.. I’ve heard good things as a regular A/T tire. M+S rated as well.

I’m not usually a black wheel fan but those 8 holes are classic.

I’d probably only consider aftermarket if going to a different size or if all four wheels were damaged somehow, but dang those F5's look great.

I like those SCS Wheels. I’d stay with 5 spoke wheels on the Cruiser. I like the Stealth 6 for the Taco.

I had these on a suburban and they were great. I don’t know if they are as off-road specific as you may want.

1 vote for the American Racing Wheels, I like em.

I always vote for our Cooper Discoverer AT3's. We’re still very happy with them.

I will need to look into those. I like the american racing wheels, but I wont do chrome and I don’t know how black will look with my truck. I know they look good on white.

Yeah I get the black under beige/tan might not work.

Gotta go to the LT section for the size you want for the Coopers. The SUV section doesn’t have them available in 285/75/16 but the Light Truck section does.

http://us.coopertire.com/Tires/Light-Truck/DISCOVERER-A-T3.aspx

We have 255/70R17 on the Commander and we’ve been very happy with them, installed in the summer of 2015. Plenty o tread on them still.

I had the DynaPro ATMs for about 40k. Good tire in gravel, shit in sand and mud. Got real noisy on the highway as the miles went by. I went to the BFG All Terrains a couple of years ago and like them more.

I recently got a set of Goodyear Duratracs. About 5k miles so far. No complaints beyond the fact that they were expensive to buy and cost 1-2 mpg relative to stock highway tires. Even in stock size they look extremely aggressive. They’re also snowflake rated, should last for 50k + miles, and do a bit better offroad due to the hybrid MT / AT tread.

I have no love for the Hankook brand tyres - the Transporter is wearing a set of their van tyres and they have been the worst dirt road casing and the fastest wearing tyres I’ve ever used in 17 years with the exception of the Kleber branded tyres that it came with in 2001.

I also have no love for marketing so I’ll throw some potentially off the wall tyre options at you:

Nankang AT-5 http://nankangusa.com/tires/rltsuv/nankang-53853.html?tab=details

General Grabber AT2 http://generaltire.com/tires/light-truck-crossover-suv/grabber-at2

Toyo Open Country C/T https://www.toyotires.com/tire/pattern/open-country-ct-on-off-road-commercial-grade-tires though there are a couple of of Toyo models worth a look in your size

These are all what you call snowflake tyres and they all have a following down this way.

The Nankang tyres are pretty cheap here but they come from the same factory as Yokohama and Mickey Thompson brands and the casings are awesome. More on this in a forthcoming O&E post.

The General Grabber’s are well under rated tyre - Mum runs them on the Disco now and rates them highly...especially compared to the much more expensive Pirelli’s they replaced. Again...heavy duty casing.

Toyo tyres have a quite following down here, mostly among the commercial operators and again mostly because the casings are built tough. And yet again they aren’t expensive. Unfortunately we don’t get the model I’ve suggested but if it is commercially rated and it’s Toyo then it can’t be too bad.

I’ve looked at the grabbers but they seem so... Budget for their price. I’ve heard the Toyo is a brand to keep an eye on and the first ones I’ve never heard a thing about. Thing with the hankook OEM line is that they suck. But most oe tires so even from good brands. I’ve got Dynapro ATM on the gx but I won’t know if I like them for some time.

Have you thought about going up to a 17-inch wheel instead of sticking with 16's considering there are more tire options?

Kinja'd!!! "adamftw" (adamftw)

There is no reason to run any other tire than the KO2. All my friends who have tried others have come back to the KO2 for an AT. MTs are a different story, but not a lot of people really need a MT.

I know people loved them but I hated my AT3s. Terrible wet traction on the road and not very puncture resistant off road. I tore two of em, one with only 1000 miles on the tires.

A few people on Expediton Portal share my opinion, but we’re all just people on the internet. The offroad stuff I could chalk up to abuse, but the on road stuff was really what made me dislike them. They wore GREAT though.

The on-road usage has been amazing on them for us. In a lifted full-time 4x4 Commander. They minor and rare bit of off road we’ve done has been short trips on mainly dirt and grass. Certainly not anything with large rock involved.
