In the mountains, to Boone, NC and back. Think I’ve got the old girl reliable. AMA.

My high school pal had a ‘66 7 Litre Galaxie, and since then (30 yrs ago) I’ve wanted one to restomod. What year is yours? Sedan or coupe?

Mine is a 289/auto ‘63 Sedan in Corinthian White on Champagne. Based on the fact that it has plenty of power and is a little dodgy already even with fresh tires, brakes, and shocks, a 7 litre (or hell, a 390) sounds like a death wish in a can without some help. I mean, that thing would be a more or less unguided missile.

Final numbers aren’t in yet, but I used probably 90% of the $25 I put in at $2.12 a gallon. Gauge never went as low as when I fueled it. If I’d used it all, I’d have been bettering 13mpg, as it is, I think I’m bettering 14 - in the mountains. Not bad at all - I think better since I fixed my choke thermostat.

I mean, I could try, but I’m kind of surprised my efforts worked on this one, so...

But officer, I was over the right too, what do you want me to do?!? The damn road is too small!
Super cool that she’s solid now. Seems a fantastic road trip sled, fuel consumption notwithstanding.

Meh. No more or less than any other mid-size big block coupe back then. His 428 was built to the 425hp spec and was a hoot with its 3.00:1 open rear. Never did get around to putting that T-Loc axle in though..

Cruise would be nice, as the ol’ gas pedal leg got a workout. Lurching around corners also was a little tiring on the back. I can see why people ordered the XL spec, awesomeness of a giant bench notwithstanding.

I remember my dad had no problem coaxing 20 mpg out of a 68 Fairlane with a 289 / 3 speed manual, when on the highway. That seemed respectable. I remember the 66 Galaxie with a 390 seemed to get 12 mpg no matter the speed (a little worse if crawling in city traffic).
