Someone hurry up and buy this thing already, please. It is dangerously close to impulse buy territory.

That’s not really how an auction works...

Sorry, I really only want the last model or the first-gen my parents sold before I got my license.

The alternator is in a shit of a location, but still that’s a sad excuse for it to sit undriven for 5 years... And no service in for 4 years before that.

There’d be enough work to do to get it to a baseline maintenance level to warrant dropping the engine.. which is halfway to a swap.

I know it’s an easy fix, but I just hate those yellow wheel centers so much. Please buy it and paint them silver.

I really wanted to buy a non-turbo MR2 instead of a NA. But finding non-turbo cars in good condition was basically impossible. Would still love to have one.

fine, someone needs to make a bid that pushes it out of my impulse buy price range so I can ignore it for the next 4 days. It’s been sitting there with 2 bids for the last 3 days.

It’s not like i’ve been dreaming about engine swapping my own MR2 for years or anything.

Is the alternator really that bad on these? I swapped mine on my V6 Fiero without much fuss in my garage (had to jack it up a little to fit out the bottom because it’s lowered), and I’ve heard of people swapping them in parts store parking lots. That’s one curse of putting a fwd-intended drivetrain in the rear.

It’s down low sort of between the block and the subframe.

I have a powersteering model with the huge 100amp alt, so I had to remove the muffler and loosen the rear subframe to get it out, getting the new one in was a test of patience and flexibility (and a little bit of percussive persuasion)

The Toyota BGB tells you to remove the engine, but the smaller alts can come out through the top.

Like I said, it’s a shit of a spot, but not enough to warrant letting it sit for years.

How is it still that low? damn. If it stays under 3k it may be mine...

Also good stuff on bat:

Wow. That’s certainly more work than mine required. Apparently the automatic Fieros are a bear and a half, though. I just wish I had an automatic belt tensioner, because I needed a second person with a pry bar to get enough force while I tightened the bolt. And through the top wasn’t an option for me.

I agree that this beaut’ shouldn’t be sitting over something so simple. It would actually fit in with my garage (yellow GTO, mid-engined Fiero), if I had the room.

I’ve never even seen a Fiero, they never shipped them down here. I’d be interested to see exactly how different they are in stock form.

“Down here”...? Aus? Yes, Aus. Nice.

I haven’t driven an MR2 myself (yet), but from what I’ve heard, the Mk1 MR2 feels lighter, and more tossable than the Fiero. And the Fiero makes a better GT car. After some modifications, I think my Fiero would surprise a lot of people, even with its early suspension and the flaws that entails.

I thought this was a great article from Hagerty. Mine is an 85 SE 2M6 like the one in the article, too, so I might be biased. And the photos are great.
