Most populous country, China 1.4 billion — 2nd most populous country, India 1.3 billion —3rd most populous country, USA 324 million — 4th most populous country, Indonesia 258 million — 5th most populous country, Brazil 206 million

Should I have known that? I mean, it makes sense, but I never really thought about it, I guess, since China and India dwarf all others by so much. Back in the day, the USSR had more people than the USA, so I guess that’s been in my head. Russia’s only got 144 million.

Don’t forget that the USSR also had a bigger land area than present day Russia.

Of course. I’m guessing the total population of all the former USSR nations is greater than the USA.

TIL: The USA is really underpopulated for it’s size. You guys need to start fucking some more or maybe us Brits should start fucking less. I would like a garage that a car could actually fit in.

3rd place, just like movie production.

1st place is India. Bollywood action scenes are the best

2nd place is Nigeria. I bet you didn’t know that :] Nollywood

Had they taken over THE WORLD... who knows.

True story, I know a guy that went to an engineering high school here in the US and learned Russian. The school dropped other foreign languages and adopted Russian in the 70's or 80's because they figured ‘meh, might as well prepare for the new overlords.’

The US is like 150th or something in population density...down there in company with Laos and the Congo. It’s always humorous to me that the Netherlands has like 400 people per km and the US like 30.

One could argue that Europe is 3rd at 743 million. I would agree that Europe is less cohesive than the USA, due to differences in languages, but other than that they are very similar. They both have very varied cultural differences within their borders and both have a common currency.

TIL: Europe is more than twice as large as the USA. I had never thought about it like that before.

I lived in the Netherlands for 14 years, whenever family or friends from there come to see me here in Michigan they cannot believe the amount of house/property/vehicle we can buy here for the same amount of money.

The United Kingdom is the sixth most densely populated.

While England is the most densely populated country in Europe.

Come on, we’re best at a few things.

Being the most densely populated isn’t great. It’s a heavy weight on an infrastructure that’s not up to task (ie roads, rail, housing, services, etc...).

It’s only Scotland really being so less densely populated,

Scotland 5.295million for a 80,077 km²

to

England 53.01million for a 130,279 km²

That brings the U.K. population density down so much.

Australia, 24.1 million people, 3.1 persons per sq km.

And yet 89.4% of the population live in urbanalia. We are currently 18th on the list of most urbanised nations, ahead of both the UK in 34th place at 82.6% and the USA in 36th with 81.6%. China is 104th with 55.6%.

Most important thing about that is that in Australia many places are beautifully empty and those that aren’t are easy to get away from.

Well, if we’re going by continents instead of countries, we could add in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America and get the population for all of North America.

You folks in the Commonwealth need to get busy, too. Only 144 million people across 16 countries, with Canada and Australia as two of them? That’s only like 17 million more than Japan.

We have too many things that aren’t the British Empire, I didn’t even know the Commonwealth Realms was a thing. I have so many questions.

Why does Papua new Guinea still have the Queen as head of state?

Does this mean we still have an Empire?

Do they get special medals at the Commonwealth games?

I’m probably being taxed for this aren’t I?

Not really, its a personal union - think of it as how Sergio Marchionne is CEO of Fiat Chrysler and CNH at the same time. It doesn’t mean Fiat Chrysler owns CNH, he just works two jobs at two different companies. Same deal with the Queen, her status as Queen of Papua New Guinea is separate from, and in addition to, her status as Queen of the United Kingdom.

Those countries just voted to retain the monarchy after independence, rather than become republics. Actually, most of the ex-British colonies that did become republics also kept the monarchy for at least the first few years after independence.

The only remaining connection with the British government is that a few of the realms in the Caribbean still use the Privy Council in London as their final court of appeal. Australia still technically allows for that in their constitution as well, but it is no longer exercised.
