Now, this was not your ordinary Harley Noise Maker or SportsBike dude, this was one of São Paulo’s infamous “motoboys”, guys who use small bikes to deliver food, documents or whatever.

I was waiting at a set of lights when, out of nowhere, one of them tried to squeeze between me and the Volvo XC60 next to me at a high rate of speed, as the light had just turned green.

They bumped against the rear of the Volvo and ricocheted towards my car, scraping both driver side doors and quarter panels, and folding my mirror outwards.

Luckily my PDR guy managed to solve the problem in 2 hours.

Eh, I think lane splitting actually helps traffic flow, the problem is that lane splitting should always follow the conditions of the road. If there’s a traffic jam, the reference should no longer be the legal speed limit, but a safe speed instead and some people don’t get that.

It can help. The problem is that is depends on the judgement of the rider. I have seen way too many riders not exercising good judgement and endangering their safety as well as people’s property. Also, did this person stop and take responsibility for the damage to your car and have his or his employer’s insurance handle the cost? See, I don’t dislike lane splitting because it doesn’t work, but because it encourages so much risky and bad behavior.

Lane splitting isn’t risky behavior. If a drunk was driving his car down a highway and swerved into the car next to him, is that an argument against driving? Motorcycles are (usually) only about as wide as the riders shoulders. If you can’t walk between two cars sitting in traffic, either the cars are too close or the rider is going way too fast.

Cars are already very close. Squeezing a bike in between reduces the margin to avoid contact even further. The incident in this thread demonstrates what can happen because of that, and the rider is not well protected from injury if something goes wrong. That’s why I think lans splitting at speed is a bad idea. Sorry, that’s just how I feel based on what I’ve seen.

Guy just booked it. But I still think it helps, sure, it’s almost impossible to regulate and check how people are lane-splitting (much like left lane hogs), but in major cities it helps a lot.

I see it on daily basis, dead/downed riders on major avenues are a daily occurrence. 50% their own fault and 50% drivers using cellphones.

My Citroen won’t start was sitting at a light when this happened, it wasn’t at speed. Splitting at speed gets exponentially more dangerous, but the fact is that filtering at lights is safer for riders, and eases traffic considerably. No law is going to stop dumbasses from dumbassing, but you can’t stop everyone from doing a safe, efficient thing because some idiots do it badly. Hit and run is illegal too, but you don’t talk about that.

Yeah, filtering at a light I actually don’t take exception with. But the point remains, squeezing those gaps at any kind of speed reduces margin for error. The law regulates lots of things with the goal of increasing margin for error, but that careful and skillful people can still pull off most of the time. I think lane splitting in moving traffic makes it more dangerous for the rider. Now, I may be wrong, and maybe I’ll try to find statistics to support or refute my hypothesis, when I get around to it. Just my opinion.

The statistics do refute your opinion. It seems scary from inside a car, but motorcyclists have a lot more room (and control) than you think. A skilled, licensed rider should be able to judge whether or not they can make it through a gap in traffic, and California allows motorcycles to split as long as traffic is moving under 50 mph, and the motorcycle doesn’t exceed 15 mph over the speed of traffic.

A UC Berkeley study has found that “lane-splitting motorcyclists were considerably less likely to experience serious injury from their accidents than motorcyclists who were not lane-splitting at the time of their collisions... The study also found that lane-splitting motorcyclists were safer bikers in general than their non-lane-splitting counterparts.”

This the really interesting part:

“Rice found that lane-splitters wore better helmets, were less likely to be speeding and were less likely to be riding under the influence of alcohol.”

So, people who are more careful and conscientious riders get into accidents less, which makes sense. What surprises me is why those people would be more likely to lane split than people who are less safe in their behavior. I would think those people would be the ones to take more chances and break a traffic code.

Lane splitters are usually commuters, and people with a lot of years and miles under their belt. Squids that have a death wish generally can’t ride, and they are the ones that die doing this. Them and Harley guys with no helmets and a few beers in them. The IIHS says that 37% of motorcycle fatalities would have been prevented by a helmet. Further, “In 2015, 27 percent of fatally injured motorcycle drivers were operating without a valid driver’s license. The rate of unlicensed fatally injured motorcycle drivers during 2015 was higher than the rate of unlicensed fatally injured passenger vehicle drivers (27 percent vs. 15 percent).” There are a lot of interesting statistics on there, including age demographics- the most fatalities happen to people over the age of 50.

I see many many riders in Texas without helmets. My wife gave me a name for them in medical school. Donor cycles.
