Safety glasses - over regular glasses

Like many of you, I wear glasses. When doing work in the garage, I often feel the need to wear safety glasses as well. I like my eyes, and I’d prefer if they kept functioning as well as they have. I have a pair of safety glasses, but the fit isn’t great.

For those of you who wear regular glasses and safety glasses, what do you do? Are there some safety glasses that offer a better fit over regular glasses than others? Do you wear goggles instead? Switch to contacts when working in the garage?

I wear a face shield if I don’t have contacts in.

I wear the cheap big ones (that look like the medical sunglasses for old people) over an old pair of glasses.

I prefer a full face shield. My welding helmet even has one built it so I can flip up the welding shade and I still have my grinding shield

I know the struggle. Some safety glasses definitely do fit better than others. Look for ones like what Out, but with a ZZW30 posted.

I have a ULINE pair that fit over my glasses really well.

I don’t wear glasses but a coworker does, he actually had his prescription made in ANSI certified materials and then had clip on side shields.

This may be a more expensive route.

No safety glasses when wrenching (often end up with some dirt in my eyes if I’m underneath though), face shield when grinding.

You can get some cheap side shields for your glasses, they give them away at my work. They’re not as quick as slipping on some oversized safety glasses, but they’re far less bulky.

They make safety glasses that are designed to fit over regular glasses. I have to buy them for my co-workers. They look dorky but they work fine.

For most wrenching I don’t do anything but if I’m worried about getting something in my eye I’ll put on one of these.

Make your regular glasses safety glasses. That’s what I do. I only have sight in one eye so my lenses are made from Lexan so they’re safety glasses.

I get the OTG type safety glasses, though I’ve found squared frames fit better under safety glasses than others.

I bought a pair of prescription safety glasses from Zenni Optical. Best $30 I’ve ever spent.

I ended up getting a dedicated set of safety glasses with prescription. They were ansi rated as well. I have since got Lasik and wear regular safety glasses all the time when wrenching. Those over glasses work too, but I always hated those things.

I can’t stand the ones that fit over glasses and I sweat too much in goggles. I always wear contacts when I need to wear safety glasses. I wear my contacts like 90% of the time anyway, though. If I can’t I typically just go without glasses or contacts, because most of the time when I’m doing something requiring safety glasses it is up close enough that I can still see it fine. A lot of the guys that I work with who wear glasses have had RX safety glasses made. Another option that I’ve seen is an “RX-carrier” that snaps to the nose-piece so that you can have one RX piece made and swap it to other safety glasses if you scratch/damage them. ESS makes one that fits a few of their models as well as the Oakley M-Frame.

Huh, interesting. I didn’t even realize those were a thing. I guess given that the make prescription scuba masks, prescription safety glasses would be a no brainer.

I have contacts, but I only wear them maybe once or twice a year. I find them hard to get in/out, so it’s a pretty rare occasion when I do use them.

Huh, that’s an interesting idea. I’m guessing you are in the US, and pick them up at an army surplus store?

Unfortunately the only ones up here (Canada) that I’ve been to are pretty slim pickings. I wonder if they sell them online...

Pretty inexpensive, too. Although if you do a lot of woodworking, keep in mind that sawdust can blow around pretty easy. Despite wearing a face shield, I’ve still got sawdust/small wood chips in my eyes on a few occasions, even with a face shield.

I got mine at cheaper than dirt , but they used to have much better deals. now you got to dig through a load of junk. I love buying army stuff because it is real high quality, also cool from a collector/prepper perspective. Another website I like is Varusteleka because they have that nice high end european stuff, the crappy soviet junk, and memes.

Do you have a type of prescription that is available in dailies? I find the dailies to be much more comfortable and less hassle. They are expensive, but it is well worth it for me. Even if you don’t plan to wear them much, it might we worth picking up a box so that you can put them in for things like working in the garage and just throw them out when you’re done instead of going through the whole solution hassle just to store them for another couple weeks.

I’ve ordered from these guys twice:

Rx-Safety

Their prices on the biker / military prescription glasses seem to be pretty competitive. There are also options for coatings like tinting or anti-fog.

Just check reviews around the web to make sure you buy a pair that’s comfortable and won’t be digging into your head.

I think mine are weekly. It’s been quite a while since I have bought any new ones, as I wear them so infrequently. I wonder if I should get some dailies and try wearing them more often.

FYI face shields are not impact resistant, so if youre working with a grinder or anything with injury potential, you have to wear real safety glasses under them.

I ended up going super fancy and getting prescription safety glasses with transitions so I wouldn’t need to get my sunglasses during test drives (I’m near sighted). But I was an idiot and didn’t get the anti reflective coating and can barely see anything inside most of the time. I didn’t even save very much by not getting it either.

But my next pair will have all the coatings and it will be great.

I also use a face shield with my glasses, and generally have ear muffs, while wearing gloves, in work clothing. I like safety =)
