I haven’t heard, but I do know that the rust was the only thing holding her together. That’s a cool pic. I’ve never been a fan of HDR or filters, but it works well on this one.

WE CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE THIS HISTORY. I would go down there and help in an ideal alternate reality.

This picture is beautiful. Wallpaper-worthy. I dream of going to Texas to see the real Texas. This is the only Texas I care about.

even back in high school ROTC, I never understood the design of the top of ships. Like I understand you need a higher spot on the boat to look out over stuff. But look at that. all of that tower hardware is just open for missiles or something, 8D.

built in the days befre radar. Height provides a critical advantage to making out an opponent.

the texas main guns had an effective range or 13k yards or 7.4miles and a  max range of 23,000 yards or 13 miles, so the guns would have to be 38 feet off the above the ocean to see the spot they are shooing. but that would just give you the horizon and would allow very poor depth perception, for that you would have to go much higher to actually guage how close/far an object is.

best experiment is to put a coin in the center of a table, and with your eye 1" above the edge of the table try to put your finger on the coin. then redo with your eye @6" above the table and see how much easier it is.

The whole point of a battleship was to slug it out with other battleships. If you could accurately and precisely land a blow first you win. The crew up there were expendable.

I’ll make sure to tell people don’t apply for the deckhand tower detail in the Navy. :)

A lot of weight can’t be added or the ship would be too top heavy.

expendable is callous. The major threat and opponent of a battleship is another battleship with 14" guns. Planes weren’t a thing in WW1 when it was originally built, they came much later were much lower on the threat scale than another battleship.

And a common misconception is that the ship is 100% percent protected by armor. The main guns, bridge, and engine room are armored. Huge numbers of crew on secondary guns, AA and other roles were at risk should the ship expereince a direct hit. Again the main goal, hit the enemy first
