Especially for those melanin-deficient oppos like myself. Sunscreen is important. But equally important is that you apply sunscreen properly and evenly:

About 20 years ago we took a guided raft trip down the Rio Grande through Big Bend SP. The guide said to cover up, so we wore long sleeves, long pants and big hats. Another family arrived in their bathing suits, and my the end of the trip they were red as lobsters.

I slathered on the sunscreen like I was supposed to, but either I didn’t get it on my left shoulder properly or it rubbed off before it had the chance to really soak into my skin. Either way, only my left shoulder got sunburned.

I just use the spray now. It’s more expensive and the cans get used up quick, but I always miss a patch or 3 when I use the lotion.

Last year at the Formula Hybrid competition I volunteered to be my teams representative working the endurance course (each team is asked to provide 1-2 members to work as marshals). As I was trucking up the massive hill onto the road course at New Hampshire Motor Speedway it was cloudy. Right about when I got to my post the sun came out. I did my job like a good marshal and was facing the track the entire time. It wasn’t until later I realized the sun was on my right side the entire time. Left side of my body was perfectly fine but my right side was toasted. I looked like two face for several days.

I had lotion because the spray had been left at the house. We typically like the Neutrogena smooth-touch or whatever because it’s light.

I myself have to use baby block. I was complaining to my girlfriend that it doesn’t come in a spray can Saturday while at a water park. I was immediately proved wrong when we saw a mom applying to their child.

I missed a spot about the size of a nickel last weekend so I just went without this weekend. No more spot!

I too suffer from the paleness. But my oldest boy looks like Casper the friendly ghost. The little one tans, my “out the car window” arm tans, but the rest of us go pink and then back to white. (white is a colour or lack of it not an identity, just to be clear)

I ended up with stripes after one trip to the beach. My wife wasn’t very thorough when lending me a hand with the sunscreen. The kids were desperate to get to the water and I got the short end of the stick.

Now I’m the guy covered from head to knee. My standard outdoor wear includes a long-sleeve shirt and big floppy hat. However, I can’t stop wearing the shorts. My grandmother had skin cancer, so I’m always leery about getting burned.

that neutrogena stuff with “helioplex” (whatever that is) works awesome - it’s all I ever use now
