In the wake of Kia winning Jason Torchinsky’s 2017 ‘Markie’ for Excellence In Marker Lamp Design , it’s time to look at how the stinger could look if the US didn’t have side marker requirements:

A lot cleaner, that’s how it would look.

It kinda looks like an Alfa Romeo Charger there.

Or one could argue... nondescript.

Sometimes good design is not so much about being ‘good’ as being distinctive. It’s all well and good to get the proportions right but if we don’t aspire to distinctive details then we might as well all be driving Mazda 6's.

The GT Concept had that same cue six years ago. Maybe it’s there to break up how massive and abnormally heavy the rear end looks. Squat everyday. I like the Alfacharger look you got above.

Speaking of Charger tail lights, this would have been the new Azera.

Sure, distinct design cues are what make a car recognizable. But if the car looks worse with them (I’m aware this is totally subjective), it’s not a good design detail.

It kind of reminds me of the similarly heavy assed A7

I was thinking a mix between charger and A7

I’m still not over the side vent thing. Just doesn’t fit and looks twice as bad in person. It looks more like a backwards intake, too much going on.

Going to be confused for an Optima at some angles and distance.

In other words, mimicking the German trend (oh yeah, Schreyer). Not sure if the mainstream family box is the thing to use as a template.

True, BMW was really stronger for that in the 80's

Then Audi got into it, and MB has played with it off and on. One trick pony, these designers.

Wow the production light strip is awkward. Also a reminder of why I don’t read the front page with all those adds.
