Sometimes procrastination pays off.
Shortly after buying my DD Mariner the rear center seat belt locked up and wouldn’t release so I couldn’t put the seat back up. I ended up cutting the belt. It wasn’t a big deal since I never carry 5 people so I never bothered to fix it. Last night when perusing the inventory at the local self-serve junk yard online (doesn’t everybody do that?) I noticed a Mariner had finally shown up. Went out there today and sure enough the belts were the same color. A little sweat and $12 later it was mine. A nice savings over buying one from Ford.

When I was in college there was a nearby junkyard that had about 8 70s Volvos that I could pick parts from ... window mechanisms, a carburetor (that turned out to need rebuilding) a couple door cards, and on and on. How much fun was that?

That had to incredibly convenient! I was hoping that this one would have all sorts of parts but it was a lower spec model so no luck on things like the sunglasses bin and such and maybe a replacement for my wheel with a slow leak but I’ll take what I can get.

I learned that, early on, junkyard watchers and the yard itself would strip the valuable or rare parts. Radios and tool kits in particular were in their office and marked up.
