I don’t think the pardon itself is so much a big deal (I mean it is, but relatively speaking....), but I think its timing shows just how little trump thinks of the people of this country, thinks of the law of this country, thinks of acting “presidential”, and generally just how little trump thinks period.
He’s not a president, he’s just Captain Dumbass.

Arpaio was accused of detaining people because they *might* be illegal immigrants. The court essentially said that’s not okay please stop and he didn’t, so he was held in contempt. Pretty minor offense, he was facing 6 months or less in prison.
However you feel about his actions (though really, let’s be honest: they’re pretty racist) he broke the law, but instead of defending his actions he simply said ‘it’s an Obama witch hunt’
Trump’s pardon signals a few unfortunate things. On the face of it he’s praising Arpaio’s work against illegal immigration which implies Trump is perfectly okay with unfair and unlawful racial profiling, which is disturbing. He’s essentially saying racism is OK as long as it’s for the sake of cracking down on immigration. Underneath it’s almost more disturbing: if you claim you’re being ‘attacked’ by Obama the President is willing to ignore your crimes. By pardoning Arpaio while Arpaio is saying his case is simply a witch hunt you are essentially agreeing with him.
It’s pretty weird for a president to pardon someone at the beginning of their term, and with the looming Russia investigation I’m sure there’ll be plenty more of this bullshit.

As far as justifying it there doesn’t need to be a justification. For some reason the founders chose to give the president the ability to pardon and commute sentences, I don’t necessarily agree with that. I think it’s fair to say that most people the presidency has pardoned throughout history have been guilty, that’s kinda why it’s called a pardon.
There are numerous recorded cases of pardons for things that could be argued the convicted shouldn’t have been let off for, even as far as commuting death sentences to life imprisoned. You do realize that he was convicted of contempt not, unlawful detainment, or violating rights.
The people who were being detained should press charges or sue if they feel they were wronged. Then by all means if he is proved guilty he can go to prison or pay fines, or whatever he court decides.
This all assumes a correctly functioning justice system, but even if the wronged parties get rejected at the local level there is always federal court. Basically what I’m saying is, no matter how you feel about his crimes the president has the legal ability to pardon him.

No, The Sheriff violated the law. Period, end of story, no discussion. Police do not get to determine right or wrong, they are the arm of the law and if they are willing to willfully disobey a court order they deserve to be punished. For people who support “law and order” this should be extremely difficult to justify.

Having the legal ability to do something doesn’t affect whether that something is right or wrong.
I’m not saying the president shouldn’t be allowed to pardon him or implying the president broke the law by doing so, but that doesn’t mean he should have pardoned him and it certainly doesn’t mean I can’t question the ethics behind it.
