Is it possible to harm your car if you run over the wads on duct tape the kids put on the road as a prank? My neighbors are all upset about it happening and I’ve been annoyed at having to fish tape out from around my wheels. Curious if it can harm the car at all. What if you never remove the tape?

it’s possible , depending on how the tape is wadded up.
back about 20 years ago when I was wrenching, someone brought in an older RWD Volvo for an “oil leak from the back of the car.” what looked like had happened was a plastic grocery store bag went under the car, got grabbed by the rear U-joint on the driveshaft, and with the driveshaft spinning it around it worked its way into the differential and destroyed the pinion seal.

Driveshaft, axle shaft, serpentine belt, exhaust (cat in particular) are all not great places for a wad of duct tape.

I mean, if the ball unravels the duct tape could potentially get caught in your CV axles or brakes or other rotating things and mess all kinds of stuff up. Either way it’s probably best to just keep fishing them out, never know what could happen.

It actually isn’t a ball. They run it across the street most of the time so when you run over it it winds up around your tires/axle/etc.

I’m not out to get these kids and originally supported their ability to have fun, however after thinking of it further I’ve been pretty pissed about unwrapping the tape around the inside of my wheel. Just curious, thanks for input.
