I'm driving a 6-speed diesel Mazda 3 with the steering wheel on the right (wrong) side. AMA.

Kinja'd!!!

This thing has i-Stop, which is not good since it shudders and shakes like a diesel every time the engine starts/stops. Pretty smooth otherwise. This is probably the largest car I’ve ever driven in Ireland/UK over the last ~dozen trips.

Does it still zoom-zoom like the Mazda 3's of the 2000's or is it more like the Civic and Corolla now?

How are the roads?

I drive the Scottish highlands from time to time. Curious how Ireland compares.

Not often you come across a hire car (or any other, come to that) registered in Carlow.

Surprising that it shudders on starting and stopping - I had a diesel C3 Picasso in Italy last year and it took a day for me to realise that it was stopping every time I stopped.

It’s the correct side. Lol.

Ironically with the U.S. fondeness for weapons we sit on the right so our right hand, shooting hand, is kept free to draw a weapon be it a sword or pistol.

I thought the same thing about Carlow! I picked it up in Dublin.

My non-diesel VW Golf in Scotland two years ago was almost imperceptible when it shut down. Not the case with this car.

Revs pretty good, but I haven’t driven a Civic or Corolla in about 10 years, so I can’t compare. It does not have the torque of a V8 Touareg, that much I can tell you.

Roads here have been pretty good since they joined the Eurozone...M4 and M7 are perfect. However, I’m now out at the end of the Dingle peninsula, so it’s a lot of stop/pull over/and maybe back up, to let the oncoming car (or tractor) pass.

I totally screwed up the first toll booth coming out of Dublin....I had to get out of the car to dip my card!

Doh.

Is it an auto. I’ve heard the stop/start can be a bit sketchy with automatics at junctions where the engine cuts out before the car has come to a complete stop which stops the power steering.

It’s a manual. When stopped with the car in neutral, it shuts off regardless of clutch position. If you depress the clutch, it will start.

My Superb is stop/start and manual but doesn’t judder or anything. It only cuts out when stopped and you take your foot off the clutch.

You can disable it, but you have to do it each time you start the car.
