I think on another level, and in adopting the “death of the creator” hypothesis, it does speak to the universality of “play”, and the impingement of understood systems of understanding in a Jungian dialectic of the surreal or “dream” farm animal cartoon.

The problem with the death of the creator position is that, while untethering the interpretation from the intent frees the reader to make of the art what he will, it can also leave him cast aimlessly adrift from the shared discourse originally initiated by the author. Invocation of the archetypes of “farmer” and “animal” were chosen for a reason and should not be lightly dismissed.
This is not to dismiss the idea of that the need for play is Universal and often what the doctor ordered.
