Is a used Ford Escape a terrible idea? Insight needed.

I have been looking for a good, rust-free Cherokee Sport or Classic for well over 6 months now. The only one that was to my liking was sold as I arrived at the dealer. I prefer something with 4WD for winter (northern IN). My step-son has a FWD Escape with the Toyota-sourced V6. I’ve driven it once, and it was surprisingly responsive. I’d definitely want the V6 and 4WD, and they seem like an excellent bargain in the used market right now. Thoughts/experiences/insights? Any help would be appreciated.

...They never had a Toyota sourced engine.

The Duratec is a good engine, if a bit thirsty in that platform. There are still tons of the early ones running around so I guess that’s good. Also, you could get the 4-cylinder with a 5-speed for a while.

*edit* My cousin’s wife has an 07 with the 4 cylinder, 4wd, and over 180k miles and it’s still going strong. She won’t get rid of it. Ford replaced the auto transmission at 60k under a recall/warranty issue.

I have a 2006 Mariner which is the same as the Escape and it has the V6 (not a Toyota engine). It’s fine. It’s not exciting nor is it frustrating. It’s the definition of adequate.

They get rusty, real rusty.

Haha I was going to say good luck finding a rust free escape. There are 4 in my family and they’re all rusty. Rear wheel wells and hatch are just rust magnets.

I understand that the escape hybrids are remarkably durable. I guess they are a favorite of for hire companies.

Got a used ecape hybrid from father in law. no complaints. And as a car fix, I haven’t had to fix many. except for failed latches, those suck.

I believe they have quite the reputation for the shock towers rusting and separating from the body.

Yeah, I don’t know of a Toyota/Ford venture. I do remember the Toyota Matrix / Pontiac Vibe days though.

Are you confusing the escape for the saturn Vue that had a honda V6?

In either case, early escapes are kinda rough around the edges in terms of quality and fit and finish. If you want a jeep, then let it be said that an escape is no jeep. But the V6 is pleasant enough and the vehicle drives well.

My dad has 2 FWD 4 cylinder Escapes, a 2010 and a 2016. They are good practical cars. I am not sure how they are as SUVs.

Watch for rust. It’s usually hiding under all the lower body cladding. Kind of like Pontiacs all used to do.

I think you’re correct. I don’t expect it to be a Jeep. I am just ready to give up my unicorn Cherokee search at this point.

I was apparently confusing it with the Vue.
