Kinja'd!!!

My mother has been driving a Saturn Aura 4cyl since 2009, getting it on the cheap during the “cash for clunkers” days. She frequently says that she actually MISSES her Chrysler Sebring Convertible- that I totaled while I was in college. That’s another story for another time. I like to say I was doing her a favor.

So my pops and I want to find her a new car. She wants another black convertible just like her Sebring. My dad knows a few people who own dealerships in the area, and one dealership just got a trade-in black 2010 S5 with around 55,000 miles on it.

My dad and I both want to get the car for her. It’s a black convertible just like her shitty Sebring, but it’s actually GOOD.

But I have a few concerns. I’m scared that 300+ hp is a little too much for my mom, but it’s not like she’s going to drive like a maniac, and the 4wd and nanny systems will keep her from getting into trouble if she mashes the gas. So I don’t think she’d be overwhelmed by the power. And she drives like a rational human being, so I think it’s ok that she’ll be have more power than she needs.

But I’m also concerned about the reliability (duh). Anyone have any thoughts or experiences regarding this generation S5? Any quirks with the V6T in there? I know that it’ll need a big overhaul around 100k with the timing chain and tensioners and stuff, but that’s about all I know about Audi engines.

They are superchraged V6's, not Turbos. Maybe have her look at used Lexus IS350c’s.

It’s not as powerful(the later ones have 306hp), it be more reliable, & it have better resale value.

If you plan on having fun with your mom’s car when she isn’t around, get a CPO convertible Mustang GT.

The S5 understeers like a moose with three legs.

A friend of mine had one. Bought (or leased) brand new. Gearbox gave up at 110k miles. No idea what the issue was as he sold it without repairing.

All I can say is I have driven one and it was a lot of fun. Yeah, yeah understeer but how much of the time are you pushing it that hard?

I’m sure others can speak to the mechanical bits... but I thoroughly enjoyed driving it. My DD is an E46, for reference.

Chrysler crossfire? It’s a merc. SLK wrapped in Chrysler goodness. They are usually equiped with a 250 HP V6 so it’s quick without being crazy fast.

Why not ask her what she likes? Anyway, if you’re worried about overpowered cars you can always choose one with the base engine. Less to go wrong too.

+1 on this idea. a CPO EB with all the gadgets and A/C seats are mid-to-low 20's. Long warranty too.

Funny you mention that car! We had one for years, I wouldn’t have let my dad sell it, but it was an automatic. It’s low and a two-seater, so it became a bit too “unpractical.” I know, I don’t understand it either- my Miata is perfectly practical.

It was definitely a Mercedes and not a Chrysler. I think the only thing Chrysler did was stamp out the sheet metal for that car.

Hahaha nope, I won’t be driving it at all sadly.

3.0T is a great motor, the best they made at the time, techs love them. (I almost got into a A6 3.0t Avant before I settled on my wagon)

I’d love to get her a Mustang- but we need something easy to handle in the snow. Dad wants her to have 4wd.

It’s going to be a surprise! And this one just popped up and we can get it for a steal.

Yeah, I always wondered about that... The badging says V6T but I always thought they were supercharged.

That Lexus is nice, I’ll definitely look into it.

Yeah, I might take it for a spin every once in a while, but it’ll be a rare occasion.

So we have 2012 S5 Cabrio with 52k miles on it. Love that car. It has been very reliable so far. We are consistent with the Service Schedule. Only downside is pads and rotors have needed replacement twice and can get pretty costly. I believe its because the cabrio adds 300 pounds to the curb weight. I did replace the Thermostat at about 18k because I heard about overheating problems.

Its a very comfortable easy to drive car. My wife feels safe driving it in rain, snow, she can drive it anywhere and feels unfazed by whatever road conditions we come across. You can allegedly maintain triple digit speeds for a long time and even with the cabrio top there is little wind noise.

When it was time to get the “I have a baby” car i traded in my 2015 STI so I could keep the Audi. No way I am getting rid of it. I love that car.

There is no Bluetooth compatibility with the Iphone7 tho, not sure if that matters to you.

Ah. I forget snow is a thing sometimes. If I go to the mountains I’m normally with someone else, in their vehicle. Snow tires? I would be concerned about the reliability of the Audi, but I have no first hand experience with them.

Hmmm then I can’t think of any other convertibles in that price range.

I mean sure there’s 3 series convertibles with X drive, but those are few and far in between.

Just get her an A5 or something else.

When people go from Chrysler Sebrings to Audi S5s and don’t change their driving/maintenance happens, that’s what causes them to get so bad.

V6T means supercharged yes. No your mother probably does not need a supercharged Audi after driving a Sebring.

Yeah, I doubt we’d be able to find a xdrive 3 series drop top around here. And this dealer is a family friend, so we are hoping we can get it for cheap.
