Kinja'd!!!

Which would you take? This glorious custom Tacoma or the mint 4x4 Ranger? Spotted both of these while at a job site today. My poor beat up fleet-spec Ranger feels inadequate...

Hmmm, do the sides of the bed on the Taco fold down? If not, I take the Ranger

Pretty sure the Ranger is a 2x4, not 4x4 a sedan it is an “Edge” which is the 2wd version of the 4wd truck.

I don’t have a use for the bed on the Tacoma so I’ll say the Ranger. But the Taco is cooler I think. Both very nice.

That work bed on the Taco makes it for me. I have a thing for trucks with utility beds.

Is it really? I guess I just thought only the base models were 2x4! Huh, that kind of makes me want it more... Meaty tires, rwd, and manual transmission

I don’t like half-cabs but if you make me pick I’ll take the Ranger.

toy taco with the ute bed is what I’d take.

I only know what the Edge is because my buddy has one and is dead set on making it a Baja Prerunner style truck. would it be cool? Sure. Does he need a Baja Prerunner in Nashville, TN? Nah.

That, plus the beefy tires do it for me. I agree

I’m partial to the Edge, because I’ve got one. I also can confirm 2x4.

Oh man. That’s a nice Ranger, but the tray back with fold down sides and ladder rack on that Taco make it a slam dunk.

I’d take the Toyota simply because I could (almost) live out my dream of being an Australian tradie with a steel tray Hilux ute.

I’ve got no idea why steel trays haven’t caught on anywhere but Australia. They’re just cool.

So functional to. Full access from all sides.

No bloated wheel arches sticking out or unnecessary rear styling.

Leave the styling up front and function at the rear.

I like the steel tray, but it looks weird to me with a modern double cab...

I don’t know. Some of them work well.

Some of the Holdens are a little to car like to have a tray on the rear. The Maloo looks great but as I say. If it had a tray it wouldn’t look right.

The Toyotas, Ford’s, etc... look especially good with a Roo-bar up front.

I suspect the popularity of these beds has less to do with Australia being Australia and more to do with their uniquely-close connection to Japan, where these seem to be everywhere.

One of the major issues I have with our Oz dual cabs is the position of the rear axle in relation to the tray. It’s too tucked in and creates issues with suspension sag when loaded up or towing. In extreme cases, bad things happen...

Ye’, that’s overloading and single cabs are better situated for a longer bed without having to strengthen the chassis.

If you wanted a larger bed though, there are more suited vehicles like the Ford Transit Custom with flatbed or regular Ford Transit with a flatbed.

Which is pretty much what I run...just in VW Transporter format.

Only issue is that none of the vehicles in this class have significant 4x4 capability...AWD yes but no low range or locked drivelines.
