Kinja'd!!!

Let’s consider the //AMG 4.0 Liter TT V8. The turbos are mounted in the vee of the engine, leading to better performance and response time. Many reviewers are comparing it to much larger naturally aspirated engines. But! Will this “hot-inside-vee” turbo setup be a nightmare when one of us buys a used GT R in a couple years’ time?

Kinja'd!!!

With new cars becoming more reliable every year, a bigger question appears: what happens when they DO break? Think of not the intial buyer, who shows off his or her new Benz, but of the third or fourth owner who buys the car to drive it. AMG products are known to depreciate, but are we in for even more expensive maintenance than past AMGs due to the increased complexity?

Kinja'd!!!

I’ll leave you with Motor Trend’s latest comparison test, pitting the GT R against its hyphenated Japanese cousin.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Since Mercedes and Nissan have already shared technology with the Infiniti QX30, can we expect some kind of high-performance collaboration in the future? GT-SPACE-R? Mercedes-AMG C63 S+ NISMO 4matic?

Pro Tip - All modern AMG cars are a nightmare to buy used. They aren’t meant to be long lived.

Just dawned on me that engine will soon be available with a manual via Aston Martin. Should make AMG builds interesting in a few years time.

That’s why you buy a UZ. Hell, it even spells out UZed.

Which means the only logical and ethical thing to do, is to swap in an LS and a TR6060 manual gearbox once the warranty runs out.

Ask BMW N63 owners how that hot vee layout is working out for them.

I completely forgot about the Aston... That’s an incredibly exciting proposition. It starts out as a car with British personality and German power, then it becomes a car with British reliability and German repair costs.

If AMG started offering a manual in the GT S I’d probably be in serious financial trouble very quickly. Also my Kinja handle wouldn’t work anymore :(

I start typing “BMW N63" into google and I get these suggestions:

BMW N63 engine problems

BMW N63 recall

BMW N63 customer care package

I think I see your point...

I wonder how many of those problems are inherent to the “hot vee” layout vs BMW being BMW?

These aren’t terrible to work on. Hardest part in my opinion is getting the wiring harness out of the way of stuff, but is still easier than an M62 wiring harness. I’ve only had to do fuel injectors on them so far, engine wise, and those aren’t exclusive to this engine. These engines are seriously overbuilt. You should be more worried about the cost of brake and tires, and the complexity of a transmission service.

Just BMW things. I haven’t seen anything of the sort. But I’ll be open about it if I do. Benz historically hasn’t had anywhere near the “shitty plastic” problem BMW has.

The problem is that most people don’t properly maintain them, because it’s expensive; and that a lot get wrecked and rebuilt very poorly. Well maintained ones, even if driven hard regularly, go a long ways.

Blasphemy! Engines and trans aren’t AMG issues, M156 cams and head bolts side, but even those weren’t engine killers most of the time if whoever is working on it had half a brain (I’m looking at you Reddit R63 guy), and weren’t an issue after 2010 anyways. 113's and 157's are fantastic. Even newer V12's are really good. Screw the boring, played out, LS that sounds like it came from a farm truck

thats a good point, but that can be said of many cars. Whats the cost/benefit of keeping one alive is the real question. The equation seems to fall apart somewhere around the 3rd owner.

True. But you get the same problems with M and RS. That’s why, for any of these, it’s imperative to do your research on a specific car’s history before buying. You’ll find ten questionable ones for every good one. But when you do find that one, it’s all worth it. I think it’s just the nature of that specific market segment and the people who frequent it.
