What is he looking at? Definitely not the bolt he is undoing.

Well, he’s definitely not going to get that bolt off using a wrench twice the size of it

Hilariously wrong wrench size and the opportunity to use the box end and not do so. Finally, not looking at it from the right side, and drip pan not in the right place. So, that’s at least four things.

Oil change hack: Use a wrench twice the size that you need and don’t look at the plug.

Wrench too big, using open end side like a slapnuts, no gloves, apparently no drain pan.

This car is way to clean to be a vehicle that travels outdoors. Who washes the underside of a car before an oil change?

Nothing wrong with using the open end if it’s properly sized and seated. Sometimes the box end doesn’t fit well in the area.

Nothing wrong working blind either, if you know you’re wrenching on the right bolt.

Nothing wrong with the drip pan in the wrong place either, as long as you don’t mind making a mess.

But use the right wrench dammit!

Can’t strip the head if you use a big enough wrench!

Sometimes the box end doesn’t fit well in the area.

And there ya go. My point was that if you have a choice, like this guy clearly does, something that comes out as often as a drain plug ought to be safed against corner rounding if it’s no more work. Just good practice.

Nothing wrong working blind if there’s a *reason*. Again, it’s like the end choice on the plug. A decision to do something in the less convenient or helpful way of two isn’t completely wrong, but it’s... off. Same for cracking the bolt loose before the pan is in the right place - if there’s a reason, maybe.

You’re right that the wrench is the only thing that is *completely* wrong here, but I’d say there’s a lot of additional wrongness at work. At least w.r.t. arguable best practice.

Give the guy a break, he’s a male model. Male models don’t know shit about cars. He’s probably like huuurrr durrrrr wrench? Neat!

Nothing is “clear” when it comes to looking how someone is doing it in a picture. There’s always the possibility of something not being as accessible as it appears.

An open end isn’t going to round out a bolt or plug any more than a box end if it’s used correctly, and the oil plug shouldn’t require too much torque to prevent the open end from being used correctly. I usually prefer box ends too, but open ends aren’t evil.

And not looking at it is not something I’m worried about. I’ve learned to work blind and have never had a problem with it, but I know my dad always has to see what he’s wrenching on.

Honestly, I’m more worried about the fact that he’s wearing a watch and his hands are perfectly clean. I’m not sure I can trust a mechanic with clean hands (or not wearing gloves at least).

The worst part about the watch (and the fitness band(?) on the other wrist) is that they’re almost certainly not oil-resistant rubber. Any real oil change job, and they’ll pick up traces of oil and start to rot on his wrists. Eww. I guess you can say that’s a definite wrong and not one on style points.

As to my “clearly”, I was talking about how the plug is in a lowered boss, and the nearest obstruction away from the face is at a minimum more than the width of his fingers x2 away. So, a correctly sized combination wrench box of any sane pitch would fit that way, and even if not, the boss would allow it to go on backward. Call it 98%+ clear.

I work blind all the time, but again, style points in the case of an oil change - seeing the oil welling through the threads while you’re loosening the plug can be useful for knowing when to have the pan in, and if removing the plug the last couple of turns with fingers, it would work better to be on the near side. Again - style points and best practice.

Kinja'd!!!

I asked for the Christmas tree tab on the left for the rear carpet of our 2012 caravan, parts guy sold me this piece of crap. Doesn’t even fit. I really need the rubber inside piece and the top piece. $8 for that junk.

The problem is the catalog doesn’t show images or locations for the plugs and ‘locators’. What part number did he order?

I’ll have to check back. I got a call at lunch today that said I have to work until 11:30. And then when I get to other job, I have to be back at 8 am.

I don’t like my job sometimes.

The only diagram was for the front carpet area showed those pushed the carpet down. It didn’t have an exploded diagram with the rear like what I needed. We guess these were all the same.

We had some water bottles in the rear carpet area leak out, so I had to remove carpet to get it to dry and not mold and prevent rust, well one of the river liner pieces was barely holding on and I lost the Christmas tree part. I’m just getting tired of the rear seat smashing the carpet into the cargo area instead of fitting nicely.
