The Moon’s shadow on the Earth as photographed from the International Space Station.

As millions of people across the United States experienced a total eclipse as the umbra, or moon’s shadow passed over them, only six people witnessed the umbra from space. Viewing the eclipse from orbit were NASA’s Randy Bresnik, Jack Fischer and Peggy Whitson, ESA (European Space Agency’s) Paolo Nespoli, and Roscosmos’ Commander Fyodor Yurchikhin and Sergey Ryazanskiy. The space station crossed the path of the eclipse three times as it orbited above the continental United States at an altitude of 250 miles. ( NASA )

Yeah, I guess it is. So the ISS is just going around in circles over one spot?

Probably. If it even exists. NASA has been lying to us since its creation. They can’t be trusted

Not surprisingly, the words are related:

Umbrage (n.) early 15c., “shadow, shade,” from Middle French ombrage “shade, shadow,” from noun use of Latin umbraticum “of or pertaining to shade; being in retirement,” neuter of umbraticus “of or pertaining to shade,” from umbra “shade, shadow,” from PIE root *andho- “blind; dark” (source also of Sanskrit andha- , Avestan anda- “blind, dark”). Many figurative uses in 17c.; main remaining one is the meaning “suspicion that one has been slighted,” first recorded 1610s; hence phrase to take umbrage at , attested from 1670s. ( etymology online )

So, does one feel umbrage when another person throws shade at them?

NASA has been too busy kidnapping children and hiding them on Mars .

I did. Pretty spectacular. It never ceases to amaze me that mankind is capable of such remarkable achievements while we continue to be so horrible to each other. I suppose it’s been like this since the Neanderthals, so there should be no expectation that we will change. Base Instinct and raw emotion will always win out over intellect.

Sorry. I’ve been reading the news again. I should know better.

Go watch Apollo13 again. You’ll feel better. I’m always amazed and heartened by mankind’s ability to rise above it’s baser instincts. We are not totally animals, but neither will we ever be angels.

Basic instincts were drilled into us over millions of years of evolution while surviving on them. We are hard wired to be vicious when the time comes. A few thousand years of society won’t undue that. Not that we can’t be nice to each other or I’m condoning violence, but I think most people forget how short organized society has been around in the grand scheme of things.
