Happy birthday to me - when you smile so hard you don't hear the exhaust

I drove 996 carboxstererra S 4 to the train station today. First drive outside of the neighborhood. Smiling ear to freaking ear! No smoke once I put the 3.2 exhaust manifold and cats on. I’ve got a tiny vacuum hose that came unattached at some point, and brakes need a bleed, and... who cares, it drives!

Isn’t the first drive such a great feeling? That’s something I miss from my heavy car working days. (Engine swaps, drivetrains swaps, big engines in tiny cars...etc.)

Patton , starring George C. Scott, is one of my favorite movies. I’ve seen it many times. There is a scene early in the film when Patton arrives to take over US forces in North Africa, and he is talking with General Omar Bradley, wonderfully portrayed by Karl Malden. Patton had heard that he was going to be promoted, but it hadn’t been made official yet. Nevertheless, he asks his aide for his new stars, and the aide tosses him the pin and he puts it on. The following conversation takes place:

Patton : [ Bradley frowns as Patton pins on his new stars ] What’s the matter, Brad? I’ve been nominated by the president.

General Omar N. Bradley : I know... but it doesn’t become official until it’s been approved by the Senate.

Patton : Well, they have their schedule and I have mine.

General Omar N. Bradley : [ smiles wryly ] George, I think if you were named Admiral of the Turkish navy, your aides could dip into their haversacks and come up with the appropriate badges of rank. Anyway, congratulations, George...

$kay, I believe that you, perhaps in a former life, were an aide with a haversack to George S. Patton. In fact, I believe that you have an electronic haversack, filled with a photo for every conceivable situation. You never disappoint.

The first drive with the old exhaust, was a fret filled slow mess(just because I didn’t know if the smoke was from the “new” engine. This was heaven.

Exhaust system, oil light is on even though pressure looks good and it’s at the midmark, that vacuum line, got an abs light once of the five times I’ve started it, then just double checking everything.

Tuning would probably be a good thing, but no cels came up, so it’s something I’ll do eventually but it’s not an imminent need.

Hole in the top of the block. Probably a rod or rod bearing but I might learn more when I pull it apart.

Yeah, the old engine is done except a head maybe salvageable but that’s about it. To save money I put in a 3.2 engine from a boxster s. 996 engines are worth almost as much as the cars, I gave up about 40hp and saved about $5,000 by going with boxster s engine. The 3.2 also has a slightly better track record with rods and d chunks if you believe the anecdotal evidence.
