Kinja'd!!!

I saw a megacab ram around the other day and it had me thinking about how much room there is behind that door. I mean if ram added another 4" to the cab you could have a half door like the extended cab pickups and get another row of seats for when you need it*.

Kinja'd!!!

I doubt it happens, but if it did I bet they could still sell it even if it had a 4' bed. I wouldn’t even be surprised if it happened.

*You don’t need it. Even if you have 7 kids you don’t need it, just get a van (and maybe wrap it up once in a while)

Edit: I should have been more clear. I know there are custom ones out there already, I was just thinking if we’d ever see these from the OEMs

Custom ones exist.... not sure if any OEMs would ever, though there is a market for families with lots of kids that also need a truck with a bed, and not a SUV.

One of these pulled into the gas station yesterday while I was fueling up. Man it was funny watching him try to maneuver it. Also, he was probably the only person there with worse fuel economy than me.

Centurion did them for a long time. Both off of normal cabs and with cut down vans.

I know there are custom ones...I was more specifically talking about the OEMs. Guess I should have been more clear

Those are nuts. I can’t imagine ever trying to take one into the city. Hell, I wouldn’t want to take my truck into a city and it only has 4 doors.

In times before, I would have said less likely from an OEM - just because third-party groups existed, and makers were willing to partner with them. If the Centurion ridiculocabs had ever *really* taken off, then more dealerships would have been selling them *with* maker endorsement rather than just casually. The Centurion Bronco was fully endorsed, I think, more so than the longcabs.

With scaling back of custom van and custom truck coachbuilding, it’s more likely to see it from an OEM if you see it at all - which *is* interesting.

What if they put that third row back into the bed space to keep the overall vehicle from getting too long? And then, cover the bed space, kinda bring it into the cabin, so that you’d have a bit less storage than a truck bed, but it’d be protected from weather and stuff and could be environmentally controlled. And they could put a hatch on the back of this space to make it easily accessible.

Yeah, then you’d have something unique. A whole new class of truck. I bet someone could even come up with a cool acronym to name it.

Didn’t the coach built ones add another 50% to the price of the vehicle though? Unless you had money to blow or absolutely needed it, that was probably a really hard pill to swallow. OEMs could probably do it for something like a 10% adder, which would probably appeal to a lot more people. I’m still not sure how popular they would actually be.

I almost typed this out lol. I was about to add something saying the step after that they could cover the rear and we’d come full circle and have Excursions again.

That’s always the trick for something that doesn’t really exist on the market aside from specialty work, or hasn’t been prolific in decades. No “animal spirit” trends to figure out what to market it as, what to design it for *exactly*, and how to get into your customer’s head. Take for example the risk of getting back into the ute market for anybody in the US. Past behavior indicates that ute customers - contrary to expectation - are largely not the exact same as small truck customers, have their own expectations, have owned multiple utes, and when no utes are on the market, they buy... what? It’s been hard to establish. It’s a fact that the Ute Customer exists, but how many, where, how do we reach them, why do they like utes, what will they pay, and what do they want? Niche markets are a bitch like that.

That’s even setting aside the difficulty of predicting how much of a “created market” you’d get from people who otherwise wouldn’t have had interest until they knew what you had existed.

My son was just saying this to me yesterday as we were driving. “Dad, how cool would it be if your truck had one more row of seats like moms car. You could have three rows and a truck bed to haul my dirt bike. That would be so cool.”

Oh the mind of an 8 year old.

A suburban has three rows, and pretty much a short bed’s worth of space behind the 3rd row.

I know someone who would buy one. A buddy of mine has 4 kids and regularly tows a big camper. He came very close to pulling the trigger on a custom 6-door 3-row Super Duty.

Yeah, make that a solution to keep the crossover epidemic in check. As a matter of fact, why not 3-row sedans, GTs, or hell, even a 3-row sports car (odd but promising)?

Why not have a full-sized 3rd row seat, with captains’ chairs in the middle? You could encroach on the bed quite a bit, put a hard metal lid over it, and still have room for a couple sets of golf clubs.

My thinking was a full sized third row means either a really long truck or a tiny bed. The half size row seemed like a good compromise since the third row probably wouldn’t be used that often by most people

The other idea would be to move the third row into the bed, and cover it all with a hardtop cap with side windows.
