I Should Have Just Bought My Dream Car Instead

Kinja'd!!!

I can’t love this XF. Everytime I’m around it all I think is, “You could have bought an XJ Supersport.” This 2012 XF had such an enticing story though! It was four years old with only 15,000 miles on it because the first owner freaking died and their son didn’t feel comfortable driving it, so he sold it to the Jaguar dealer. Nearly new dead grandpa stuff is my sales weakness.

Jaguars have been my favorite animal ever since I saw a video of one biting through a turtle’s shell (the strongest natural shield known to adolescent me) in order to devour that tender little creature. Eating a cute little animal inside his own home is some serious gangsta level stuff, man!

Shortly after that, I found out Jaguar was a bunch of hot cars so I decided I would have myself a Jaaag one day. This is nearly 15 years before I became any level of car enthusiast.

Kinja'd!!!

But this XF, while being the only model year where you got the facelift AND the NA 5.0 V8, was not the car I dreamt of. I want a 2012 Jaguar XJ Supersport (though not the LWB version anymore). While this is a fine enough automobile...it’s not the one I wanted!

So now, I have a good car I can’t love because I can’t stop thinking about the what if. I feel like a crappy owner...

On a side note, I had a BMW X3 for ten days while the XF was getting a new rear bumper and exhaust housing since it was rear ended. I thought the monostatic gear shifter, indicator stock, and infotainment systems were the EASIEST things in the world to use!

Maybe the JLR system is just that bad (I avoid touching infotainment systems anyways), but I seriously enjoyed that X3 quite a bit more than the V6 F-Pace or 4-cyl XE that I played around with. Drove and delivered power just as well as those two, and thats a huge compliment. Both of those also cost the same as that rental X3 but man was that BMW an easy car to daily. Might be my new favorite luxury compact utility.

I get you. It’s just one of those lessons you have to learn the hard way. If you have a dream car and it is in reach, get it. Don’t compromise or get another car that just catches your attention momentarily. I did similar to you and I still longingly lust for my dream car. I feel a little bad about it since the car I got is really fun and awesome. It’s just not what I dreamed and lusted for.

So why can’t you trade this in and get the Jaaaag you want?

I’ll be honest, I never really understood the hate for the 2009+ iDrive. From day one I found it super easy to use, the same can’t be said for the infotainment system on my mom’s Acura.

Yup it’s worth it to wait. A few years ago I bought a 01 Civic EX coupe. It was okay but I knew almost instantly that I should have waited and found an Si hatch. I sold the Civic as soon as it was paid off and bought something more interesting

Counterpoint:I love my XF, although the two extra letters on mine probably has a lot to do with that. I genuinely love driving this car, and am looking forward to taking it out to the 1/2 Mile Shootout races at a local airport in November to see what kind of times it will put down.

My wife wants a BMW SUV. I’ve been trying to talk her out of it, but perhaps we should go look at one.

I cant afford the amount of pants Id go through if I had an XJ Supersport. Hnnng!!

But honestly though, I needed something to dip my foot into premium car ownership just to see how taking care of an “unreliable” car might be. My mom also was really wanting a luxury car and I found out she always wanted a Jaguar too. So rather than own three cars and my mom just a Camry, I said we could share this XF for now since I was buying a sports sedan regardless.

Unfortunately her Camry has been broken down since December so she has bren driving the XF everyday. I did not see the Camry breaking down and the Jaguar being reliable transportation when I planned this out...

The BMW shifter gets alot of undeserved flack IMHO. It may not be the easiest thing to adapt to right out of the gate, but after a day or two, its perfectly natural.

I don’t see why you’re not trading this in for a used Kia like I have.

Im amazed that early 2010s XFR-S, XJ SS, XJL SS, and XKRs are all around the same pricing which makes decisions even harder!

Because there are so many cars on the way that are really nice as well. But the biggest reason is that the Genesis GV80 (the midsize crossover) will be running the 3.3t V6 and will probably be on the G90 platform. That one car could replace the Amanti, Grand Cherokee, and the XF by itself. Therefore, I’ve decided that Im waiting for that car since it should also arrive right as I’m competely debt free and when Genesis is using dedicated dealerships and throwing money, long warranties, overstuffed features, and anything else they can do to get people into the family.

I know. And some F-Types fall there as well at this point. I just never liked the rear of the XJ. I looked at an XKR, but really needed four doors.

I’ve come close to “settling” for cars, but I’ve learned that as an enthusiast, I would never be happy with a stop-gap solution if the real deal is within reach.

I’ve had to ask myself to be honest with what my priorities are in a car—every Bro tells me I NEED to have a manual. If I had listened to them, I would not have had the opportunity to get into the dream car that has been my F355.

This is why a Lexus LS460L will probably lose out to an XJL when I start car shopping. When it comes to hobbies, the mind cannot stop the heart. It’s a good problem to have, and, among other things, I am thankful for it every day.

I know the feel.

Buying a Celica GT instead of splurging for a GT-S or even a Supra, was a mistake.

Have you driven the X3 35i with the turbo 6 cylinder and the M-Sport package? It’s amazing and way faster than you would think. Close to 5 seconds 0-60. Handles far better than it has any right to as well and could even be fun on twisty roads. It’s even better with the factory optional bigger/wider wheels too. Might be the perfect practical-no-compromise -compact-performance-suv daily driver. Only thing that really lets the current one down a bit is the interior, but that’s easy to see past for the driving experience and performance.

I have the X5 with the even larger 20 in wheels and wide tires it’s amazing too. Can probably out accelerate and out handle 95% of the cars on the road.

Glad to see there’s another member on here who doesn’t religiously put the manual on a pedestal. Sometimes an automatic is just the solution. Whether the car never came with a manual or the automatic is better.

At the time, my question to myself was, “Which one do you want more, your dream car at the right price? Or an open-gate shifter?”

In fact, I had bought and sold a $1500 beater just to practice. I concluded that for sports cars with over 400 hp, and at my level of driving (Skill Level: Poseur), a manual just does not offer a proportional increase in driving enjoyment.

For a hot hatch with 200-250 hp, stick all day long.

You hit the nail on the head. I cannot possibly downshift fast enough to keep up with a fast car. It’s just not possible for my skill level. And I’m okay with that. I’d get just as much fun pulling a paddle and hearing the car downshift rapidly as I enter a turn. That and as you turn around while walking away to look at your dream car the manual versus automatic argument is a moot point.
