In mid september I am flying into LAX with like 4 or 5 suitcases full of all of my belongings (going back later to get my Miata to drive across). So when I land I need to rent a vehicle to get my stuff to the new apartment. While browsing Turo for a car and filtering to manual transmissions only, I have come across a Focus RS for $120 a day. Anybody think this would be a good moving vehicle? No idea how much interior space there is in a newer Focus hatch, but I imagine the AWD system makes it worse for space. However, I think I can fit skiis and a few suitcases inside plus a passenger.
Good idea or the best idea?

Interior space is decent, but the boot opening isn’t very practical (compared to a Golf for example, it’s still better than most sedans).

Well it wont be furniture moving or anything like that. Just suitcases and a ski bag. Im thinking that many bags will fit but was unsure. I also really kind of want one of these as a daily driver so it cant hurt to try one out. My budget for a used car is irrelevant when the car is this fun.

Do it. He’s made $5500 so far (well, minus Turo fees...). Not bad.

Now I’m going be stuck with Tom in SJ?! If you rent it, just make sure you tie down whatever it is you’re moving.

But I like being hit by luggage-turned-projectiles!

I still feel like that is pocket change compared to the unknown abuse of renters putting on a $35k+ car (or a lot more if marked up). I could never fathom renting out my own car on Turo. Just doesnt seem worth it at the prevailing prices.

Yeah, I feel the same way.

But at least I know as a renter that I will take care of the car since its not your typical Enterprise rental. I actually care about not breaking it so maybe others do the same. But all it takes is that one a-hole to go doing donuts in a parking lot.

The focus hatch has a decent amount of room with the seats folded down. With the seat up there is a very small amount of trunk space. It depends on how much stuff you need to move. A subaru outback or mini van would be much more useful.

Well of course a minivan would be more useful but then that would be so much less fun.
I will be fitting 4 full suitcases and a set of skis for the ~35 mile drive from the airport. I will be picking up my girlfriend though so I will need the one passenger seat. But all of her stuff is coming over in a moving truck. Considering the amount of things I generally fit in/on my Miata I think I could make a Focus doable. Ive just not seen the interior of one in person.

You will be fine. The skis will probably go all the way into the front of the car though. I would at least wrap them in a towel or something so they don’t scratch things up.

Yup, Ive fit my skiis inside my Miata with the top up as well as the back seat of a recent Focus Sedan and inside of a ‘10 Hyundai Accent hatch. So that should be alright assuming I can still operate the shifter. I will have packed enough padding in the bag to keep the skiis safe on the plane anyways. They fit really well in the Q40 i rented recently as well. That car is of comparable length I believe.

That’s an awesome price! There are guys on Turo around here charging that much to drive their beat up, ten year-old, 3 series.

But the resale on those is going to be great, so this is probably mostly profit.

I cant imagine a Focus being bought for $40k is going to have great resale 10 years from now. Yeah its a an RS but I really doubt it will hold value like the Sti does. But yeah if it does hold value, of course that will be a good deal then, assuming he leaves out the “rented it out a bunch” part while selling.
