Kinja'd!!!

Project 3.2 996 lives! I just took it on its maiden voyage around the block. I’ve started up the engine 3-4 times now and today was my first time driving it around the block.

It has no mufflers so it’s loud as hell. Better yet, I don’t know yet how I’m going to mount the mufflers.

So, it runs, drives and shifts. However it also smokes like holy hell. I have one hopeful thought:

When the old engine blew and oil and coolant poured into the exhaust pipes, it coated the inside and it’s going to take time to burn it all off. I dumped all the pipes out, but considering the time between the engine blowing, me getting it, and me actually dumping it out, it probably stuck on the insides of the pipes and soaked into the cats, etc. and so maybe with time, it won’t smoke like this.

What does Oppo think, does this seem plausible or is something else going on?

More details to come when I don’t feel compelled to only drive under the cover of night due to stink and noise.

Any way to hang/prop them up to let them drain out? With soot to soak into oil can take forever to come out. My 914 heat exchangers were loaded. I propped them up over a tray and put them in the sun to help drain out. Some came out and they still smoked like a battleship the first time I drove it.

The cats might be shot. maybe get the exhaust on and see if you can burn it out. Maybe try washing? never heard to tried this.

I may have to give it a go. I originally thought it would burn off, but after the drive, im not so sure.

In the meantime, I may put the manifold and cats that came with the engine(was thinking the 3.4 exhaust was the better choice) on it to make sure the exhaust is the cause(cause if it’s the engine, tears will be shed)

have had exhaust systems on cars steam off/ smoke for HOURS after starting them up, after fixing head gaskets.... smoking so hard, that you can barely find the car inside the cloud of smoke, or see the road behind you going down the road. it’ll burn off, you just have to be patient about it, and let it run........

Agreed - it doesn’t take much residue to make A LOT of smoke.

That’s a plausible explanation for sure. Eventually it’ll burn out of the pipes, but the cats may be done for. There are so many tiny little passages and hole in those. It’s hard to imagine them getting soaked in oil and ever getting it all out.

Congrats on the first drive!
