Kinja'd!!!

While in stop and go traffic coming back from the eclipse yesterday evening we were rear ended by a kid on his phone. Everyone is ok. He hit the Minivan behind us with enough force that it pushed them into us and us into a Prius. The cop came and the kid flat out told him that it was his fault. I popped the hood at the accident scene and the front crash structure was pushed back to the radiator. No leaks though. When I got home I look under the body and saw that the driver’s side “frame rail” had buckled. When talking to the insurance lady she said that based on the age of the car there was a high probability that it would be totaled.

Kinja'd!!!

I even took a picture of it during the eclipse!

I loved that car. Bought it new in 2003. 187,000 miles and hardly an issue. Fun, fast and I could haul the entire family. The fastest soccer mom mobile in the lot. I have no idea what could replace it.

It makes me sad.

So...truthfully...one of my biggest fears is talking to the insurance adjuster with the cruiser because it will take SO LITTLE to total it and they would offer me next to nothing for it. Sorry for the loss.

This sucks, the car world needs all the Evos it has. Maybe you can get the payout, buy it from the insurance company and fix it enough to make it a track car?

What a bummer man. I miss my Evo all the time. I was going to try to buy another 8 or possibly a 9 but the market is so high on them it is ridiculous. It could work in your favor though since the replacement price is so high. Don’t take less than fair current market value. I would take the average value of ten currently for sale and don’t settle for a penny less.

I’m not sure exactly how this works, but you might want to talk to an insurance broker (not an agent) to find out if/how you can pursue services from an independent or public adjuster. I don’t deal in cars, but I work on property damage claims a lot as an expert witness, and the public adjusters do incredible work for their clients. Having a car where there’s super limited sale data makes it all the more necessary, since there is a good chance their settlement will screw you either deliberately or accidentally.

Also, most policies allow you to buy the car back from them at roughly scrap value but with a salvage title. You should consider that even for parts. Hell, you might take the settlement and talk to a not-dealer shop about what to do now - but you would be crazy to submit an estimate from anyone but a dealer.

Good luck man - that sucks. Every jalop’s biggest fear.

Don’t give up on it yet. My girlfriend’s SVT Focus has been totalled twice now, the second time for frame damage. We took it straight to the body shop and used a fraction of the payout to repair the frame and respray the panels. She pocketed the rest and the car has been just as reliable as before. Plus the front end is nice and shiny.

While every instance is different, it’s worth trying to save it.

Damn. Sorry to hear that, but glad everybody is okay. Reminds me of losing my 2001 Golf through no fault of my own. I loved that car. And the insurance money, what little there was, just went in the bank. Hard to replace a paid-for car for $1500.

One of the reasons I sold mine. If something like that happened I couldn’t afford to replace it with what they’d have paid and I would have been screwed. Now I’ve got a truck that’s worth 1/3 as much, but at least that’s what I’ve got into it if something happens.

I would not want to know how little an insurance company would give me for the Galant VR-4, I would guess about 1200 bucks. Based on year and miles. I only have 4 times that in the car.

You can try and ask for a real replacement value, you just have to prove it. By finding cars like yours in the same condition before the accident for sale at hire prices. It’s worked for a few people i know.....one with an EVO even.

I have respect for both cars and went back and forth when I bought this one. I had an Eclipse GS-T prior to the Evo, so I have been happy with Mitsubishi. Now, Mitsubishi still shows that you can buy a 2015 Evo X. That is kind of funny/sad as well.

So sorry about the Evo! That’s sickening, as you’ve cared for that car well. If you do look at an STi, may I recommend finding a used wagon? I know the Mini sorta works like one, but adding a little more “utility” to your fleet makes you more versatile while still maintaining your standard of not owning a rolling Romper Room.

Well, hey there. Didn’t know you lurked around here.

Yeah, it has been a great car. Considering buying it back depending on the cost for track fun. Mechanically it is perfect. No leaks from anything.

The Mrs has been mentioning that she would like something with more utility for the minions. I am giving her a lot of leeway on this one. Wagons have been discussed up to and including....

Kinja'd!!!

My game plan right now is to get her what she wants and then in a couple of years it will be my turn.

That sucks. I’m truly sorry to hear it. Your evo ownership is one of the few I’ve known of that has actually been completely positive. Which makes it all the harder.

Get everything you can reasonably ask for in terms of compensation, and then test drive the shit out of a bunch of cars And find the one that’s best for you.

Most importantly though. Very glad everyone is safe.
