Kinja'd!!!

This is Marmalade, named by my sister when she was 4. He’s 16, but only started acting like it recently. Lately he’s been very picky about his food, only eating canned tuna or salmon, no dry or wet cat food. He’s also been getting directionally confused, and went missing for a day about a month ago, we found him only a block away, seemingly unable to find his way back home. We deemed it a fluke, since for most of his life, he’s roamed the whole neighbourhood, being seen by people we know almost 2kms away.

On Saturday morning, he seemed groggy, and didn’t want any food. That’s not unusual, so we left for the day. It’s not unusual for him to be gone for a while, so we didn’t get concerned till the next day. We walked around looking for him, talked to neighbours, and called shelters. By today I was worried that he was dead, who knows where, and we’d never know. Anyways, he came home while my girlfriend and I were both at work, and fell asleep. When we woke him up, he seemed to be in really rough shape. We took him to the vet, they said he was very dehydrated, and took blood and urine so they can see if anything else is wrong. After being rehydrated at the vet, he seems more normal, and curled up like he usually does.

I’m very relieved, I was trying to prepare myself to say an uncertain goodbye to a cat I’ve known for most of my life, but that might not be the case just yet. He’s not out of the woods, they’re suspecting he has kidney problems, but at least he’s not lost who knows where and dying alone. Trying to let myself be hopeful about him being around a while longer.

I might write a more coherent post later about him, this one is pretty much typing things as I think them.

My cat has a similar problem. See if the doctor has a sample of urinary S/O cat food. It made all the difference in the world with my old cat.

Marmalade seems like an excellent kitty cat. Hope he gets better soon.

Kitty hugs from my Enzo.

Adorable. I worry about my cat too much to let him go outside, plus he’s territorial (he’s a stray) and the fleas population here is crazy outdoors.

We’re lucky with the area we’re in, it’s quite good for outdoor cats. I’d only have an outdoor cat that was outside from a couple months old though, just in the backyard. When they grow up outside, they’re so happy with all the space to roam, as long as they’re smart. It can be stressful though, especially if they like leaving for over a day sometimes

Lili made it to 18 - good years. She had kidney problems the last 2, so we needed to stick a needle under her skin twice a week to hydrate her. She also had to eat special food (that she hated) but we kept her in very good shape until she just couldn’t go on. And that’s what you’ll do - you do the very best for them you can until you can’t, then you do the best thing for them you can.

I hope you have a couple more years with that precious little furball. Just a few months ago I had to put down my cat Mandy after 15+ years and I still feel like I lost a part of me.

Another issue with my cat was the fear of him getting run over.

There were many times I’d see him run across the street and go over into the sewer gutter at the 3-way intersection in front of my house.

One time I even saw him defying my calls to come home by just standing at the edge of the gutter and saw a car go right by and he didn’t even flinch while looking at me.

It’s been 2 years since he’s been allowed outside.

I’m glad Marmalade is doing better! It’s always hard to know how to best approach a number of things with an aging pet. My doggo is going to be 12 in October and, fortunately, she seems to still be in good shape, though she definitely sleeps a lot more than she used to. My childhood doggo made it to 15, though he went downhill very quickly in his last six months.

Yeah we had a cat get clipped by a car before, but she made it and got right back to normal with only a couple injuries.

Not flinching around cars would be very stressful for sure

We had a dog who made it to about 13, although that’s just an estimate. He also went downhill very quickly in the last 6 or 8 months. He would’ve made it longer. but he got arthritis really badly, until he started losing the use of his back legs.

It is hard, this one is now the oldest we’ve had, so other than dealing with their pickiness with food as they get older, this is uncharted territory
