Kinja'd!!!

link

I had a friend that had one for a while. I must say it’s my favorite luxury car I’ve ever experienced myself. The only problem is I’ve vowed to never own a car with a transverse engine bigger than 4, ok maybe 5, cylinders.

Kinja'd!!!

Although I guess that doesn’t look too bad.....

Man, i can think of a few transverse mounted engines with more than 5 cylinders in cars that i’d like to drive.

Lets see...NSX, Evora, Miura, Cizeta V16T, Noble M12.....

Like why this era? (80s) or why this one of this era?

For the second part. Because I really don’t know about any other 80's Caddilacs.

For the first part. The 60's and 70's ones are a bit to large, hard to find, expensive since they’re classics. These aren’t desirable, but I’d imagine parts availability is still pretty good because GM.

You need a transverse straight-eight:

Kinja'd!!!

If that’s too many, then a straight-6 could be the way to go:

Oh, you wanted more insanity? Here, have a transverse mid-engine V16:

It’s not the driving, it’s the maintaining.

To be fair, it’s only 4.5 cylinders wide.

How the general public ranks snow worthiness:

1. 4x4

2. AWD

3. FWD

4. Walking on foot

5. RWD

Driving a small Cadillac is a sin against nature.

I think what this means is I should get one and swap a K-series Honda motor into it. I mean it would probably make similar power right????

At 9000rpm maybe. You’d never have enough low end to move that barge at a reasonable rate.

I’m not ashamed to say I want one of these. I’d certainly change to a more modern power plant though. I’ve driven one with a 305, and it was embarrassingly slow.

To be fair, the VW VR6's aren’t that bad, because the whole idea was to make a six cylinder engine for transverse mounting in spaces that would normally house an inline 4. Since it only has a single cylinder head and most of the stuff is up top, maintenance isn’t as bad as a transverse V6.

Cadillac (and GM in general really as the C-Body was also used at Buick and Oldsmobile) was in a weird spot with these cars. They had to get more efficient, but they also had customers that demanded big comfy cars with big back seats. The easiest way to do that was to go FWD and eliminate the transmission tunnel - these things have absurd space in the back even in coupe form. But they were still too heavy for the V6 engines that GM had at the time so they just stuffed V8's in sideways. (The Buick and Olds got V6's on lower trims, but the Cadillac needed more power and the prestige the V8 had a the time. Also the DeVille got the diesel V6 as an option but let’s pretend that never existed.). Remember too - these aren’t small block Chevy motors. They are the Cadillac HT, series which is still pushrod, but a different design that was intended for transverse mounting from the get-go and are a bit smaller displacement ranging from 4.1 to 4.9L.

As a final note, it’s worth pointing out that there are some wacky longitudinal engine FWD Cadillacs out there. I think late 70's-early 80's Sevilles use that layout.

Kinja'd!!!

they are very nearly the same car as the caprice, with some character line changes....... the caprices with the 305 were slow off the line, but once they got rolling, they felt good. fly down the road at 90, just the same as if it were 40. like driving a sofa, sitting on a cloud......... can always fit a sbc 400, or a big block in one of those cadillacs..... get them to pay attention......

I think one of these would be a perfect home for an LS truck motor. Even the 5.3 would be a huge improvement. A 6.0 would really wake it up without being so powerful that it ruins the sofa on wheels driving experience. Plus, both would yield a nice mileage bump over the original motor.

i dont know if you have ever gotten the opportunity to look in the engine bay of one. there is enough room to put just about ANYTHING in there.

i would be all about that manual swap..... and finding some winding curvy roads, so i could hear the tires scream around every corner......... road race cadillac?

I’m well aware, I’ve worked on one several times. I’m just looking at it more as a boulevard cruiser.

For a sleeper I’ve always thought a Dodge Diplomat would be a good starting point. Still front engine/rear drive but enough smaller that it’s quite a bit lighter.

i remember seeing the diplomats as police cars when i was a kid, so they dont exactly pass the sleeper sniffer with me. they had some decent power options.

Kinja'd!!!

when it comes to sleeper, its hard to beat the old work vans.....

Kinja'd!!!

i would twin engine the thing, with two 454 coupled nose to tail( lightly built) with some small work, each one could put out i horse per cube, for an easy 900 cubes of low cost low stress power. and so its loud, tie an old muffler, half fell off under it......

I actually helped someone build a Ford Aerostar cargo van into a drag van. He put a modified 460 he took from a wrecked truck and put it in behind the front seats. He had plans to add a blower, but he moved to another state, and I don’t whether it ever got done.
