*UPDATE and repost for morning crowd*

So a year ago a really good family friend passed away. He was an amazing friend to my Mother when they were younger and became a good friend of mine too. They didn’t live too far from where I live now and we would hang out and talk cars etc. As a child I remember coming up to visit them with my Mom and Dean had a beautiful fully original 1940 Packard Sedan.

Kinja'd!!!

I remember as a child riding in the back to the local restaurant to get dinner and other things like that. It was so amazing I would just ask my Mom if we could take the 4 hour trip to see them just so I could get to ride in it. We as humans do we got older and since I moved to the area I finally convinced him to take it to a car show with me and we all had a blast.

Kinja'd!!!

Well I stopped by to see the Jan (his wife) and catch up and after touring all the remodels to the house she did after he passed, she told me it is for sale. This has been tearing me apart inside because I don’t want this car to disappear. She said she was asking $10,000 obo and the only way I could come up with even close to that money would be to sell my GTO.

Kinja'd!!!

Therein lies the issue that I still owe money on my car and would need to make sure I can get enough to cover the loan and the purchase. Though not really an issue with the low miles and demand the cars have in the enthusiast market. I then have the issue that I don’t see my car selling for that much due to the failing repair done when it was rear ended under the care of the PO.

My thought is I can always buy another GTO in the future, but I can’t buy his car again.

Please help me Oppo. And yes I would be willing to DD the Packard till I

A. Get my Sprite running

B. Buy a motorcycle

UPDATE:

So I could totally live with out a car till the Packard would be more DD ready or if it breaks downs and here is the Packard info

1940 Packard One Ten 4 door Touring Jr Flathead 6

I think I am going to sell the GTO and buy this.

Hm. Maybe offer to help her sell it so you can keep in contact with whoever buys it?

See if she’s willing to accept payments. Maybe half up front and the rest on time?

I like the payments idea. Unless she needs the money right away, she knows she can trust you.

DDing a 70+ year old car doesn’t really sound like the smartest move; part availability and things like that. Maybe if you had a back up car or had a bunch of cash to throw at any potential problems, but if I was in your situation I would just stick with what I’ve got.

I know I spent 11 months unemployed with an M3, but that was a completely differnt scenario. Would have been way different if it wasn’t paid for.

I live less than a mile from work, so walking or bike riding would be an easy thing to do.

Sell to an Oppo? Pics? What’s the current condition? Do you have somewhere to store it if you managed to purchase it without selling your GTO? What’s the value, and any chance of getting a loan?

So you could live without a car if worst came to worst?

I will say it’s really hard to take emotion out of car buying.

I could very easily live w/o a car if I had to.

I think it is technically impossible unless all you do is buy a Camry for driving to and from work. You don’t care about color or anything, just literally like you bought a toaster at Target.

Kinja'd!!! "CaptDale - is secretly British" (captdale)
08/21/2017 at 18:35, STARS: 0

Yeah I could store it a few places if I even had that choice. Hell she would probably let me keep it in her garage because she doesn’t use the space for anything else.

Which car are you asking about the condition on?

The Packard. It’s not like I buy antique cars, but $10k seems like a pretty darn good buy.

I tried to do my best to take emotion out of my car buying experience when I got the E92. I think I did a reasonably good job.

But that isn’t an emotionless purchase. You picked something that would be fun and in a color you wanted right? That is some level of emotion.

$10k does seem like a really good price. It is in decent condition. I know it has been sitting since he got sick and for the last year since he passed, so I am sure basic services will be needed to get on the road.

There’s nothing like an old Packard, and I know the feeling of being sentimentally attached to a car. Did you ever get to drive it? It’s quite a unique experience and not always fun.

That sure seems like a reasonable price for something like that, if it’s in generally working order. For sure it will have little things go wrong; I’d drive it the short distance to work and get some of the kinks out, so that when you actually want to drive it more it will be more prepared.

If you have a place to keep it safe and out of the weather, I’d jump on this opportunity.

edit: What is that sticker on the windshield?

Definitely hope you can save it, and that will be AWESOME if you can buy it as it is an amazing price and an amazingly preserved piece of history, BUT, keep in mind this is a 70 year old car for DD duties! Not trying to be a party pooper, just saying it’s not going to have things you take for granted now (A/C, etc, etc) and parts for a 1940s Packard when needed aren’t exactly at your local AutoZone and could take days, etc to arrive. I think you said you can live with public transport, etc easily though?

Also hoping you have a pretty secure place to park it as I imagine, considering Packards are high on the classic car list, it would also be a target for thieves both at work and at home if it’s all original (which it is). Maybe you could pick up a cheap, basic ecobox for DD / errand / etc duties (something you don’t care much about) and get this old girl for fun? :)

One gorgeous machine...

Oh don’t worry about that. I want to make it reliable enough to drive all over the place, which a few years ago it was, so I don’t think it would take much to get back to that state.

No I know trying to DD would be ridiculous. But maybe every now and then. I have a pretty good suspicion that if I asked I could keep her where she is parked (my friends garage) since she doesn’t really use it. Plus w/o the GTO payments I could pick up a beater pretty easily.

Sounds like a good plan then! The only issue is whether selling the GTO is going to hurt later on. We all have a car which is ‘the one’ for us....hopefully you won’t regret selling the GTO in that sense? :)

Heart-based car purchase decisions are not to be made lightly :P

Oh selling the GTO will hurt. Probably a lot, but it is a car I can buy again when I can. I may never be able to have this car in my life again and I think that would be more upsetting.

This is YOUR car. It’s meant to be. These types of situations only happen once in your life, if at all. If you don’t take this opportunity, you will forever regret it.

Yes, you can get another GTO someday, one that doesn’t have an accident history.

Kinja'd!!! "CaptDale - is secretly British" (captdale)
08/22/2017 at 13:46, STARS: 0

That is 100% what I think too. Plus the accident history doesn’t bother me. Not for the someday plans I had for her anyway.

But the Packard is more important to me. I will miss the V8, but that is ok. I know my mom really would like to buy the Packard too, but I know she won’t.
