Kinja'd!!!

Concorde chasing the 1973 eclipse across the Sahara desert. Flying at mach 2 the plane managed to stay in the shadow of the eclipse for over 70 minutes, 10x the viewing time as a stationary observer on the ground.

I used to do this for most if not all eclipses right up till she was taken out of service.

Sorry, just noticed, that should read, ‘they used to’ rather than ‘I used to’.

If I found that photo on a reputable site, I’d be more apt to believe it. It almost seems too perfect.

Found this around a year ago...

http://motherboard.vice.com/read/the-concorde-and-the-longest-solar-eclipse

... probably here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse_of_June_30,_1973

And this may be a pretty interesting read too (mentioned as in the Wikipedia entry):

http://www.springer.com/cn/book/9783319217284

Is the Vice feature the one you were reading? If not you could probably tell us where it is...

Wow, that link of yours mentions so many interesting things.

It seems the pic is indeed a fake... (the moon/sun bit “was added”, says the man who commissioned the image) but even that part is fascinating in itself. Read until the end of the page.

Interesting .pdf also mentioned:

http://permalink.lanl.gov/object/tr?what=info:lanl-repo/lareport/LA-UR-82-5105

about an NC-135 also following that same eclipse.

Excerpt:

Liebenberg recalls looking with awe at the shadow of t h e moon racing across the Sahara Desert. The flying altitude of the SST was so high that by Air Force definition it was in space, and the curvature of the earth was clear against a purple sky, as the plane raced to intercept the elliptic cone of the eclipse shadow. The precise flight plans were drawn using a computer code developed by Art Cox, a code so accurate that the plane arrived at its destination within one second of the predicted time! As the mission proceeded, those on the 135 watched in disbelief as the SST streaked by and above at 55,000 feet.

Forgot to add: the idea of the Concorde zooming past and away reminded me of the (alleged) sign at the entrance of the Habu’s home base (Kadena):

“Though I Fly Through the Valley of Death I Shall Fear No Evil, for I am at 80,000 Feet and Climbing”

Yeah? Well the Blackbird stayed in the shadow for 1,842 minutes.

Yeah? Well the earth stayed in the shadow for, like, the whole thing.

I wish the Concorde were still around.
