Here’s how my day went:

Got to Uhaul at 8:45 for them to be open at 9 am for my reserved truck.

Guy rolls in to open somewhere around 9:10-9:15

Sets alarm off so wait while that gets sorted.

Talk to a lady about her dog and helped her load the old guy into her car while her husband was getting their rental.

Guys who showed up after me but got in line in front of me didn’t have a reservation but wanted the guy to show them different trucks and go over prices.

Eventually they get a 15' truck. They get the keys with directions to where the truck is and I start to get helped. They come back 3 different times with issues that the poor uhaul guy has to get up and deal with because these idiots can’t follow basic directions or back up a 15' truck. Once they finally leave the lot the guy looked at me and said “they should’ve gotten the insurance”

Once it got to me my contract that I had already filled out and set up on the phone/online got messed up. Originally $154 blew up to $370. Among the extra costs: 14 dollies and 27 furniture pads. Once things got fixed it all worked out. I’m even due a refund of almost $13. Leave uhaul at 10:15

Because it took so long at uhaul my friend who was helping was only able to help for a short bit before having to leave. Loaded all my stuff and set off for my parents. Get to parents, unload some stuff and load on some furniture. Discover the couch and chair I planned on taking had been ruined after being in the basement so long.

Lots of accidents on the way out so a 1.5ish hour drive turned into over 2 hours. Unloading went smoothly. Had to call water department to come back out to turn on my water because they turned it on and then back off.

Drop off uhaul. Head back to atl for my car and tv. Back to athens. Unload last stuff out of my car and then a trip to Walmart for cleaning supplies. Lots of pictures taken of various bits of damage I don’t want blamed on me for move out and pictures of how disgustingly dirty the house is/was. Found significant mold in one closet and signs of water damage from a leaking roof in several other places.

Give up on the idea of unpacking and just work on scrubbing the bathroom so I can get clean and go to bed. Finally get to bed around 1:30 am. Get up at 6 for work. I’m tired.

It never goes smoothly but at least the hard bit is done.

Onwards and upwards mate.

Yeah. Fortunately I’m one of those people not easily ruffled when things don’t go as planned. I have my hope for the best plan and then what is likely to happen plan. I was grumpy but that was from being tired and hungry. The main concern is the closet of mold right now

Couple of my U-Haul experiences:

24' Diesel NON-TURBO truck. 5 speed manual transmission. Governed at 55. Speedometer (and therefore odometer) failed mid-trip. At least it made it really hard for them to charge me for any extra miles. That one was for Boston to near Syracuse, NY.

17' truck to go from Raleigh, NC back to Syracuse, NY. Got just about done packing the place only to discover the truck had a wonky electrical system, manifested in having no interior lighting, and iffy external lighting. Bright and early the next morning, called every U-Haul in the area and found one with a 24' truck that I could swap into. Drove up there, backed the two together, and commenced to move the well-stuffed 17' load into the 24' - at least going to a bigger truck made it quicker. What didn’t make it quicker was missing the gap once, and STICKING MY LEG THROUGH THE RUSTED OUT BUMPER. It went down easily enough, but got pretty torn up as I pulled it back out.

Since then, I rent from Penske when I have to. Turbodiesel International trucks, and my experience with them has been that their trucks are low-mileage and include (gasp!) cruise control.

I’ll never rent from U-Haul again.

The last time I reserved a truck I reserved at a specific location only to learn that they moved my pick-up to a different spot 30 miles away. Rural roads, so it was both time and distance lost. Then when I showed up the person at the desk took forever. I think I lost 2+ hours that day just dicking with Uhaul.

Glad your move is done though, and there wasn’t anything TOO bad to deal with.

The truck was way better than expected. Fairly new, clean, radio and AC worked. Easy to drive too.

So it could’ve been worse for me I see. Cruise control would’ve been nice

Yeah. Coffee and the fact I have no choice but to work today are the only reason I’m not in bed.

Oh yeah.

Several hundred miles pressing the go pedal into the floorboard as hard as I could got very tiring after a while. Especially when it didn’t accomplish anything most of the time.

My speed was limited by traffic more than anything. But there was no governor that I found.

I have no doubt about either! You may need a coffee IV after a day like that.

I know there’s all sorts of fancy designer apparatuses out there. Personally I’m fine with a traditional electric coffee maker. We have a Krups that has lasted like a decade so far.

Kitchen in the new place is tiny so I’ll probably go with a French press

I still keep thinking I need to drive back when I finish work. It is kind of nice only being a few minutes away again. Now that the mold in the house has been addressed I can finally start unpacking.
