Someone is selling their 2003 Type 1. For those who may not be in the know, the original Beetle was manufactured in Mexico until mid-2003.

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

It sure is odd seeing more modern interior materials in a Type 1 body.

i would steer clear....... its registered as a 1965....... title fraud. you would always be waiting for the day that someone found the vin stampings on the other parts of the pan/body........ right before it got confiscated, and crushed. and either you or the guy that you bought it from got heavily fined, or a sentence............

Oh yeah it’s totally shifty as hell. But still neat to see in the US.

And, of course, the obvious questioning of it’s legality comes into play. Because there is NO WAY this thing meets US safety standards...maybe emissions, but definitely not safety.

This thing is one call away from the federal crusher and sending it out of the country may be it’s best chance of staying intact...though it wouldn’t be legal in Canada until next year.

The ultimate end of air-cooled cars in the US was emissions regulations, so it probably won’t pass emissions either. And there’s not really a question of legality, he basically says it’s illegal in the ad.

It’s neat to see, but there’s not much sketchier than an ad that admits to fraud right in the listing.

“registered as a 1965”

Oh, as in ‘illegal’ then? Gotcha.

That interior looks like it’s straight out of a 1980s economy car.

that would be THE way to get it back legal, and legit. you would be basically using the one in the ad as a parts car. you would need to get........ a non superbeetle pan(up to around ‘73), and matching vin body

WITH MATCHING papers. and then re-assemble the car. or eventually the crusher would get it..........
