I was 2 hours late for work today, because I ran out of light yesterday installing sound deadening in the GT86 and had to finish it off this morning.
It’s been a VERY long time since I last found myself racing against time to get my DD back on the road in time for work: I gave that shit up as soon as I could afford to pay someone to work on the daily, and keep my own wrenching to the fun car. Brings back my yoof :-). Although I’m now a mass of aches and pains due to 10 hours of contorting myself round the interior, so maybe I don’t feel exactly like my 20 year old self.
Turns out there are downsides to this idea of combining daily driver and fun car into one vehicle....
Also: male Torx heads on the seat bolts? WTF, Subaru Toyota?

Also also, why is Kinja so idiosyncratic about frickin’ picture orientation? (I know, because Kinja...). Thumbnail upside down and main pic right way up - genius.

Have you driven the car with this new sound deadening yet?

Only to work this morning, which is over smooth freeway so there’s not a lot of road noise.
I did the trunk and rear seats & quarter panels a few weeks ago and that made a definite difference: much less low frequency noise coming from the back. Doing the front (& rear floor) doesn’t seem to have reduced the overall noise level much, but I now can’t tell the difference between front and back in terms of where the low frequency stuff’s coming from, which before I could.
So I guess that implies its damping out the rumble but that there was more of it coming from the back than the front. Which would make sense on smooth road - exhaust noise probably dominates (once you’ve plugged the induction pipe, which I did ages ago).
The real test will be when I get onto some rural roads - they use a lot of stonechip surfacing here, which is bloody noisy. I’m hoping that’s where doing the floor will make a real difference.
Haven’t bothered doing the doors, I don’t think noise coming in from the side will contribute much except in traffic, and I don’t tend to have the stereo up loud enough to rattle the panels.

I’d think the doors would do a tiny bit for wind noise. How much weight do you think you’ve added?

Maybe 35kg (75-80lbs). I used 9.5sqm of 5kg/sqm MLV, and I’m guessing about 1/3 of that wound up as oddments in the trash. Plus some Dynamat and some foam, but the MLV’s where the weight is.
I don’t expect it to affect the handling noticeably - it’s mostly low down and between the wheels, and we’re only talking the weight of a tank of gas. Might cost me a few tenths on the track, but I’m playing not racing, so as long as the fun factor doesn’t change I don’t care.
