Kinja'd!!!

They promoted 2 people last week. One of them started working there after I did. This isn’t the first time this has happened.

They know I work hard and efficiently and treat everyone with respect. Management always has me training new hires and such. I’m also one of the more experienced video editors there but clearly that has no merit for cliquey office politics.

I want to get out of this negative teenage mediocrity environment.

I’ve been trying to get a better job for a while now and this shit just keeps adding motivation fuel. I’ve been brushing up on my web design skills. Gonna continue those online courses I signed up for recently, learn responsive web design, redo my website and perhaps freelance a bit to build a portfolio so I can apply to web design jobs.

I hear you - corporation I worked for long ago promoted someone over me who was hired the same day as I was ... she was clearly unfit for command (sound familiar?) but there it was. I quit and went to law school, but that’s another story.

Not sure, but then again I was in my cubicle doing my job. Whatevs ... got to put my letter of resignation on her desk first. And her boss and I are still friends today.

My friend, I’m not sure there is any organization where politics don’t play as big a role as talent. It’s true in the ivory halls of academia too.

You’re response is the right one, and it’ll pay off.

Not so much advice as encouragement. I’m not much of an ass kisser either.

I left a decent paying job where I had very low expenses to join a high growth startup. 5 years later, the startup is still kicking (actually doing amazing) and I’ve risen the ranks in everything but pay. In terms of retirement and fun money, I am 100k total (conservatively) off of where i would be had I stayed put.

I refused to play politics. However, I’ve learned the hard way that’s about knowing when to stand up, knowing when to stand down, and knowing when to duck. It’s a fine balance that you have to work out. You don’t have to compromise your morals to do that.

Unfortunately my personal windows to stand up are razor thin. There’s nothing worse than walking into a meeting with your CEO and looking to bring up pay and have him start with a complaint about how anyone ever wants to talk about is compensation.

My advice: have a conversation with someone there about career growth options for you. Let them know that you want to be there and contribute more.

never go to Adelaide if you value your life

Hobart is a big country town

Perth is so far laid back they’re almost comatose.

Ask them why you’re getting passed up. It could be “cliquey office politics” or there could be a real reason. If they don’t give you a reason, start looking for new jobs.
