I don’t think I have. So, here goes:

Engine:
5.9 Magnum

SpinTech Mid-Length headers

Hughes RPM Air Gap intake, for high(er)-RPM fun

4 barrel throttle-body

Trans:

AX-15 that’s in it, until it grenades

Hurst shifter

Rear axle:

3.55 with SureGrip

Suspension:

I want to lower it a couple inches front and rear

Wheels/Tires

Keeping 6 lug- Probably the AR Bajas I have in the garage on 235/60/15 Cooper Cobra Radial G/Ts in the front, 275/60/15 rear

5 lug- Weld ProStar, same tire combo

6 lug winter: stock wheels with the tires that are on it now

5 lug winter: random crap wheels with current tires

Body:

rust repaired, Chrome front bumper and grille/headlight bezels

Roll pan from AAR Fiberglass

Repainted in factory Driftwood Satin Metallic/Light Driftwood Satin Glow (I’ve heard it called both)

*Maybe* a shaker hood. Yes, they really do make them for these. Functional ones, too.

Interior: It’s pretty much perfect as is.

Basically, somewhat similar to this: (This is owned by a guy on a few of the Dakota groups on Facebook)

thats some nice daydreaming...... the kind that i USED to do....... it was more of wishful thinking......

if it were me........ AND ITS NOT ME....... i would find a used carbed 318, or 360 out of an old truck. i would then do some research, and figure out where the heads that are ON IT peak out at flow wise. i would buy a cam with THAT amount of lift, and a duration that would give me the most power in a very USABLE rpm range, say 2400-ish. find an intake that works in the rpm range of the cam, and find a good small cfm holley at a swapmeet for not much. put your headers on it and go. i wouldnt worry about trying to lower it. the springs up front SHOULD sag some from the extra weight, and give it a nice rake.

with as much abuse as you would be putting on it after JUST an engine swap, save your money on paint and body, it wont be sitting still long enough for people to look at it too close. you know whats cooler than a shaker hood?......... NO HOOD......... leave your bumpers, people around HERE park by feel........

but nothing wrong with daydreaming right?..........

Well, it’d still be a daily, so no radical cams, plus a Magnum swap is easier than hell, and cheap. Also, stock heads on them outflow the LT1 Chevy. People around here can’t drive, but they can at least park. And in the dead of winter, I’d want some sort of hort.

The 2nd gen RT wheels look good on the 1st gen trucks. And if you’re thinking of magnum, you can always stroke it too. And you should be able to grab brakes off a 2003 for 4 wheel discs if you like.

I grabbed a set of Durango rear discs for my RT, I’m hoping they’re a pretty easy bolt on, the Durango discs are a bit different than the Dakota rear discs, but all the mountings seem right.

I’ve been wanting to put air bags and a four link on mine, but that is pretty low on the list. Power train swap or a stroker will be next after if get the rear brakes swapped out, but that will be after it hibernates for this winter. It’s good to dream a bit.

the nicest thing about a manual trans, is that you CAN daily radical cams.......... but the important thing is to combine all the elements (heads/cam/intake/carb/headers) to all work together in the same approximate rpm range, while keeping the build inexpensive......

The R/T wheels look good, but I’m old school and like 15s rather than 16s or 17s (I can’t remember which they are) The front discs/rear drums stop it just fine, so I’m not too concerned. Maybe someday.

The only real issue with the Magnums is the Beer Barrel intake. The rest of it will pull happily, but the intake is dead after 4800, hence the Hughes and throttle body being the only mods I’d want to do to it besides headers.

yeah, but if you were to get something oldER, and ditch the comuter controls and injectors, and go with with a carb, and distributor, on a real 4 barrel intake...... you could go from pie in the sky daydream to real deal cruising....... for not an unreasonable amount of ca$h.........

The Magnum V8s actually do have distributors rather than coil packs. Also, the Hughes Air Gap is just a modified Edelbrock 4 barrel intake. If I were to get a different truck though, I’d get a mid 80s Ram and go for a 4 barrel and yank the smog crap.

once you start to do your own stunts, things become affordable......

its the difference between “i need an engine, let me order a crate engine on line for $4k in engine an parts to support it”....... and “i am going to carefully assemble an engine out of a $300 pile of parts i got off craigs, spend another $200 in rings and bearings, $100 in gaskets. + whatever upgrades i want to spend for (cam/carb/intake $500.) and be monies ahead because i did all the greasy dirty work”........

you’ll get it figured out......

The oem wheels are 17", and yeah, if you’re good with the smaller diameters, no sense adding inspiring weight.

Drum brakes suck though. I had a full viper brake kit on there for a while and it was great, but I needed to run spacers up front and wasn’t a fan of the fitment of the calipers so I sold it off after about a year, but the rear discs were very nice to have, and looking back, I could’ve just done the rear discs and been done with it, oh well.

If I were racing it, I’d want 4 wheel discs. But it’d just be a fun little street truck.
